We arrived safely in Vietnam yesterday! The trip here was eventful as ever! It seems that the actual travelling around part has all the events and funny stories! We caught an early morning bus from Phnom Penh and drove for around 6 hours when the bus driver gets out with a bucket of tools! Not a good sign I was thinking! He faffed around outside for a while and then continued to drive - at around about 20 miles an hour with a clunking noise every time the wheels turned!! When the bus began to judder going over bumps, the driver would drive a little bit further! We drove along like this for about 20 minutes! I think he wanted to get us to the border of Cambodia so that we'd have somewhere to stop and wait for another bus. We were told that the next bus would be there in an hour but we were doubtful seeing as we'd just driven for 3 hours to get to that point! We waited in a small, sweaty service station for 3 and a half hours! Luckily there were refreshments and toilets where we'd stopped so it wasn't too bad!! The new bus was better than the last too as the air conditioning was a lot better! It is hot out here!
We arrived in Ho Chi Minh city (Saigon) at around 7 in the evening. I think the transport is going to be like that a lot! Ho Chi Minh city is enormous! And the drivers are even more mad than in Cabodia if that were possible! It took thew bus around about an hour to get to the centre of town to drop us off, that was partly due to the traffic too though.
We met a friend in town, Dan, he'd been there a day already. He didn't have any problems with his transport! The 3 of us went out for drinks until about 4 in the morning! They don't seem to close the bars here! It was quite chilled out though and we were eating Wantons at 3 in the morning! Dan got beaten up by a little girl trying to sell flowers on the street! It was funny! She just started smacking him! Beth and me laughed at first but then thought we'd better not encourage her and told her to go away!
We went to the Palace today and also the War Remnants museum. That was another horrible museum! And I can't believe how recently all those atrocities happened too! There was a list of tortures that thew soldiers would put the prisoners through and I don't know how anyone could come up with such sick and cruel things! The wqorse part was seeing photo's of the poor, tortured prisoners - just heartbreaking.
