After a few steins last night at the Berlin Haufbrauhaus (famous beer hall) a few of us in the group braved the early morning and did a third Reich walking tour. Our tour guide was really knowledgable and the tour was amazing. We saw the Berlin Wall, heard about the history of East vs West Germany, saw the holocaust memorial, Brandenberg gates, went through checkpoint Charlie and many more amazing historical sites.
During this tour Chris and I learnt a lot and after speaking with a few people in a group the general consensus was that when you learn about Germany and WWII it is almost portrayed that the Berlin Wall and WWII are one in the same and yet they are two very different events in German history. Yes the Berlin was a result of what happened after the war but it was not as often portrayed a part of the war itself. (Hey you guys might know this but a lot of us didn't!!) the second thing was finding out the dates of the Berlin Wall and that section of history being so recent. With the wall
Coming down in 1990 it literally means it was in both Chris and I's lifetime which makes it so much harder to grasp that kind of thing was still happening 25 years ago.
We then spent the rest of the day in war museums and saw the panoramic Berlin Wall museum which was very cool and then a free museum called the Tripography of terror which is all about the lead up and events during the WWII.
After such an intense day we were able to relax that evening with an organised pub crawl with our tour through Berlin. Let's just say there will be a lot of tired people on the bus in the morning (have to be gone by 7am!!)
