June 19th (Friday) - Day 110 - Melbourne
We urgently needed to do some washing so that took all morning. That afternoon we walked into the CBD and had a good look around. We had to do some shopping first for more winter clothes. Afterwards we went on a very long walk around the centre. You can tell that Melbourne is older than Sydney as all the buildings seem to be smaller but longer. Also Melbourne has really wide streets, big enough for 4 lanes of traffic and 2 tram lines in most areas. We ended up walking along the river in south bank, along the outside of the largest casino in the southern hemisphere. We tried to cook dinner in the hostel but it was a mad house. 10 cookers for 400 people! After dinner we met up with Tom. If anyone was reading back when I was in Asia, he was a guy we travelled with for 30 days. He lives in Melbourne. It was really cool to catch up with him and I am sure we will meet him again before we leave Aus.
June 20th (Saturday) - Day 111 - Melbourne
We had another late start, nothing to do with the fact we were out with Tom the night before. We had another day around the CBD. Firstly we needed to buy tickets for our airport bus as no one would be selling tickets at 5am the following day. We then booked a trip for when we return from Tazzy. Our next plan was to get on the tourist tram around the city so we could take some more of the place in. we were going for about 10 minutes before they told us they had to turn around and go back the other way. As the route was a big loop we had to back track quite a bit but this turned out to be quite good as we saw more of the city than we planned. The next stop was a large market. They mainly sold tacky souvenirs - will have to pop back there. Next stop was federation square. As it was the shortest day of the year an arts group was putting on an 'arty' light festival. Why they do it on the darkest day of the year was a bit of a mystery. They had loads of cool acts from fire dancing to Turkish candle dancing. That was quite cool for an hour or so. The rest of the evening was the same as any other apart from we got an early night due to our 4am start!
