This week has been a perfect example of why day to day blogs are such a no no. Had I writtenone, it would mostly go along the lines of: fruit & yoghurt for breakfast, taxi to dentist sat in a jam for an hour, three hours of dental work (in conclusion of root canal x 1, crowns x 6, white fillings x 3, teeth whitening x all), few Chang beers and pad thai in the evening. And repeat. I did get time at least to see all the Bangkok sites in between, and it goes without saying that The Grand Temple, Wat Pho, The Emerald Buddha and all the other historical essentials are stunning. However, before I head off to Laos in a couple of days, a short entry was essential just for Pattaya.
Pattaya is two hour bus ride from Bangkok, and it's basically a theme park town of Thai women ready to service white aging british men. It's like the film Westworld, in that you can basically do anything you want to the inhabitants. Want to grope the arse of your waitress you've only just met? No problem. In fact if you type Pattaya into YouTube you can get the picture. Put the TV on there and the adverts are mostly local ones consisting of visa agencies to get your 'girlfriend' back the UK, complete with video of old white men and young Thai girls hand in hand sat in bars.
Head down neon coated Walking Street in the evening and you can treat yourself to a ping pong show. No guessing what happens here but you don't need a paddle. In fact it's not just ping pongs, everything from cigarettes to razor blades get their moment of fame by appearing in and out of places they shouldn't. The flyer said we'd get to see live frogs as well, but they didn't make an appearance.
I was on the bus to Pattaya with a couple of guys from the UK and a girl from Canada. We had a good old boozy all day session when we first got there, and when we were all hammered the girl thought it would be interesting to ask the old white guys what they were here for as we walked down the street. With completely no embarrassment all of them replied 'young thai girls', apart from one who as soon as she approached him and before she said anything said 'how much?' Pattaya is a scary scary place!
