So our next stop was Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Travel by tuk tuk was a good way to see the city but I was quite shocked when two guys on a motorcycle tried to steal someones camera...a snatch and grap job! Luckily she's tough and just held on! Despite that little incident the people I met and spoke to we're lovely and friendly. It was a great experience haggling with the locals in the nearby markets! The Russian market was my favourite! Brilliant fun, full of colour, food and a whole lot of people. Our saying for our group was "SAME SAME but DIFFERENT" meaning "similar" I found it on a tshirt and bought one for like a $1..the banter was the best.. There was a really amazing palace, and some great places to eat and drink along the water front! Getting drunk was way too easy with a beer costing about 50cent haha!
A day later we took a tour to the S21 prison and the killing fields of Cambodia..I don't really know what to say! I felt sick when I came out of the S21 prison knowing what the Cambodian people had been through..Our own guide had lost his father, brothers, his sister and granparents to the Khmer rouge and Pol Pot. regime. The killing fields were just as bad leaving me a hole in my heart..it just shows how one evil man can do so much damage to a country and its people.
Moving on from Phnom Penh was again a very long bus journey to Sihanoukville. A place where we could just chill for a few days lying on a beach. When we arrived we went to the nearest beach closest to all the hotels, it was nice but I found it very busy being constantly asked to buy things and often threatened by children if you refused..not the best selling technique haha.
The following day was amazing!! The french beach is the place to go to, it was much less busy with the occasional seller but no threats this time. The beach was beautiful and the water was so still, only swimming disturbed the peace. Football, volleyball and frisbee kept us happy all day and again food and drink was so cheap it was brilliant.
Chilling in the evening at beach bars watching the sun go down, having a BBQ with friends is my idea of heaven!
Could be worse!
