Nat and Beck Go Large!
We arrived in Buenos Aires on Saturday morning after a rather snuggly night aboard the coach. Lucy and Cherise have been here about a million times (ok, this was their third) so they were our official guides for the whole time here in BA. We stayed in the San Telmo barrio, where they do lots of tango (Argentina being the home of tango; see, we're learning things!) After checking in, we had a well-deserved siesta before heading to our 1st cultural experience in BA, Hard Rock Cafe (we're trying to visit as many as possible!). Rather large lunch and a cocktail later, we headed to Recoleta market, which is held every weekend, and is full of handicrafts etc, and is where we spent a lot of pesos! Seriously, it is a dangerous place for women, full of jewellery, clothes, handbags and all other things that make our credit cards quiver with excitement! Luckily, the stalls don't take plastic, so we just had the pesos in our purse to spend. We all bought bits of jewellery, on the premise that "no-one will have it at home"...just that the four of us are going to look the same if we all head out together! Me and Beck both bought handmade shawls (it's rather chill here) - mine is white (dangerous territory, but it's stayed clean so far) and Becky's is green with fur trim. We wore our new purchases out that night - Becky looking like a queen in her green scarf, me being deferred to princess status and went to a restaurant for pasta, vino and tango. We finished off the night in Gibraltar bar, but we were rather tired from all the shopping frenzy, so had an earlyish night.
The next day, we had planned on going to the local team Boca Juniors match, but unfortunately couldn't get any tickets, so we went to the local cafe and had a scrummy lunch before heading back to Recoleta market! We managed to get some culture in before the day's shopping, we went to Recoleta cemetery to visit Evita's grave, the cemetery itself is like a mini-city full of little houses, only they have dead people inside. We then headed to the market (after a visit to ye olde hole in the wall) and proceeded to spend the whole damn lot! More jewels, handbags (these ones weren't there yesterday, plus they'd been handpainted by someone called Nat, it was like a sign) and Becky bought a black shawl, otherwise known as the Queen's Disguise. We also saw the most beautiful bag in all the world, was made of metal and had loads of jewels on it. Me and Beck both had our eye on it, but we're sure the man who was selling it told us it was 7000 pesos (about 1400 British smackers), though we hoped it was just us getting our Spanish numbers mixed up! Rounded off the shopping with a couple of Hard Rock cocktails (it's right next door to the market, and we couldn't find an Irish bar), then headed back to San Telmo to go out for dinner. We were supposed to be going for steak in El Desnivel, one of Lucy and Cherise's fave BA restaurants, but when we got there, it was closed! Gutted! Headed for an Italian restaurant instead, then to Gibraltar bar for a drink before going back to the hostel for a lie-down - a must after heavy meals I have found, dates back to Oz times!
