Naomi and Becky's Travels
Fraser Island is amazing!!
Did a 3 day, 2 night 4wd self-drive camping trip - had a really good time.
Met the day before our trip and got split up into groups... we had 10 people - there were 5 of us brits - me and bex, Zena, Ashley and Deip, 2 german girls - cathy and alexa, a swiss bloke called pascal and these 2 weird dutch boys called pete and joey, who turned out to be very rude and unsociable!! Watched a video about the island and learnt what to do if we saw a dingo. Went shopping for our food and alcohol amd seemed to spend a fortune!!
Had to be up at 5.15 ready to meet in teh bar at Koalas, Hervey Bay at 5.45am!! horrendous!! Had to chekc through all our camping gear to make sure it was all there then had a 4wd briefing - where to go on the island, how to drive the 4wd, speed limits etc.
We then had to pack all of our stuff into the jeep - bit of a mission... we seemed to have a lot more alcohol and food than the other 4 groups!! We spent $24 each on food and $36 on alcohol... all the other groups spent about $12 on food and about $20 on alcohol - oops!! Might have had something to do with the 4 cases of 30 cans of beer, 4 bottles of vodka, 4 boxes of wine (5 litres each!)... oh and the bottle of tequila!! We were only going to be there for 3 days!!!
Eventually managed to get all packed up and we were on the way to catch the 9am ferry. Arrived on fraser island about 9:45am and began the inland track across to the other side of the island... took about an hour... the island is made completely up of sand... it's the largest sand island in the world... so takes ages to drive anywhere!
Stopped off at Lake Mackenzie - absolutely stunning!! The water was so clear and blue ot was pretty unbeliveable... the water even tasted nice... its quite hard to belive how an island in the middle of an ocean made completely of sand can have freshwater lakes on it!! Got a bit snap happy as you can probably tell!!
From here we then drove across to the eastern beach where the beach is used as a road... some of the 4wds were flying along... we had to be a bit more careful being top heavy and having to dodge the saltwater.... one of our friends from our asia tour did fraser a bit before us and was in an accident where the jeep rolled over 3 times!!
Took a couple of hours to make it to the northern part of the island... got to indian head but the tide was coming in quite quick and if we giot saltwater on the engine we lost our bond money so we avoided it like the plague!! Got stuck in the sand as we were trying to turn around to get back to a suitable camping area! Had to dig it out and all of us push!! really funny!! We then hammered it back down the beach until we got to a bit that we were allowed to camp in and set up camp. 2 of the other groups also pitched up with us.
Left the boys to put up the tents while we drank the goon (boxed wine in our language!)... we did make up for it though and cooked spaghetti bolognaise for dinner on our gas stoves... that was after digging out the girls toilet!! Boys were in charge of injecting our watermelon with some of the vodka using the needle from a first aid kit!! Knew they were handy for something!!
Had a night of drinking games before we went to bed really late (not really... we all kind of passed out about 10-11!!!). It felt really late though!! That combined with goon and we were sparko!!
Woke really early the next morning once the sun rose - about 6-6.30... couldn't drive on the beach until 9 though so cooked sausages on the barbie for breakfast and packed up the tents and loaded up the car.
Drove back up the Indian Head and walked to the top of it - gorgeous view. Indian Head is supposed to be a tiger shark breeding area - didn't see an though... did get told that we should definately not swim in the ocean!!
From here we went back down the beach to the Maheno shipwreck... dont know much about it... has mostly been worn away but the bare shell remains stuck fast in the sand.
Next stop was Eli creek - a fresh water creek where you walk to the end, hop in and float down to the sea... really good - no photos of us though... didn't want to get the camera wet!! This was our wash for the day!! No showers around so it was the best we could do - was quite funny watching us all having a scrub down... at least the other tourists there thought so!!
Drove further down the beach to set up camp for the night... didn't realise it but we were in the bit we got told we weren't allowed to be in!! It is for bookings only!! Oops! A ranger came along but he was ok about it luckily... good job as it was starting to get dark and we had set up our camp!! One of the other jeeps was with us. Got absolutely bitten to death by these little fly things - they were little b*****s!! We went on a killing mission with our flip flops... didn't do much good though - they were everywhere!!
Cooked a BBQ for dinner... did quite well i think... had burgers and steaks and potato cubes cooked with onion as well as a pasta salad!!
Saw a few dingos walking round our camp... I thought I saw one when me and bex went on a toilet mission... turned out to be people but before I realised it I turned round and legged it back to camp screaming!! Exactly what we had been told not to do!! Oops!! Good job it wasn't a dingo or I might have had a chase on my hands!!
More drinking games followed involving tequila this time!! Then we all went to bed about 12ish...
Up again early the next day... the tide didn't go out until about 10 so had loads of waiting around to do... when we could finally drive on the beach we drove up the beach and began the trek to lake wabby... a lake with a big sand dune beside it. Got there and were a bit disappointed that the lake was green - that was our wash!! Didn't fancy swimming in it - especially after we saw loads of cat fish swimming about near the edge!! Climbed the sand dune and saw lots of dingo footprints! Got back to the jeep then began the drive back across the island to get the 1.30pm ferry back to hervey bay.
All in all a very worthwhile trip - really enjoyed it! Bet you never thought you'd hear me say that about camping!! No shower for 3ish days!! gross!! We all smelt pretty bad by the time we got back to the hostel!!
