So now we’ve arrived in Port Fairy where we will be picking up the Ocean Road proper. It’s been an interesting few days. I am loving the camping- I’ve always loved to camp and I love the basic ness of it. It is cramped, and there is little privacy and little room for dignity but it still feels like luxurious camping to me. We’ve stayed at the first site which was pretty bleak but with excellent facilities. The second night we were at Mount Gambier. The site was much better as a site and we are slowly finding our feet with how to camp. Using the camp kitchens and the communal facilities gives you a much better experience than trying to manage in the van. As a drive it’s been a bit disappointing so far but I think we haven’t got to the really scenic bits yet. We’ve gone through miles and miles of fairly bleak bush type scrub then today it’s been miles upon miles of logging forests. We stopped at Portland for a wonder this morning and that was nice. It was the first European settlement in Victoria and it was just about possible to imagine how it must have been then. It was a whaling port and now survives on timber and an aluminium smelting plant. But there were some great old timey buildings. And I drove the RV this morning, Mount Gambier to Portland so I’m feeling very proud! I loved it- I’m loving the open road and the feeling of freedom and discovery. And now we are pitched at Port Fairy and it’s nice to know we are here for a couple of days so we can spread out and chill a bit. And the sun has come out as well. I’ve been really impressed with this site in terms of facilities too. I’m about to go into Port Fairy for a wonder so I will write another update soon.
