Today we got on the shuttle bus and headed to the train station in Gdansk. We visited Sopot today, which is a beautiful resort town about 25 minutes north of Gdansk. As we have journeyed for the past 60 or so days, we have found that train stations are a great place to get frustrated. You know where you want to go, but you have to know so much more. You need to know how to buy a ticket, which line in the train station is for the type of train you want to take, if the ticket machines take bills or credit cards, what denominations of bills the machine will accept (in this case, nothing more than 10 zloty), where to get change if you don't have the right bills, how to validate your ticket, which platform your train leaves from, where to get off…the list goes on. Seems simple enough right? Well maybe if people speak the same language you do it is but we found that people in train stations don't speak much English although they do smile when you ask if they do.
Anyway, long story short we got to Sopot. It was a beautiful little town with a main street filled with restaurants and shops. You can buy Amber at almost every shop, and felted materials are also a very popular craft. We made lunch a first priority. We had some delicious sushi. There were pictures on the menu thank goodness because a Polish sushi menu can prove to be difficult without them. After lunch we rented bikes and took a beautiful bike path along the Baltic Sea. We rode from Sopot all the way back to our ship in Gdansk and then returned to Sopot. We also headed north towards Gdynia but didn't make it all the way there. We rode about 25km and our sore butts tell the story, but bikes are the way to see things. You can see so much in a short amount of time and it is a real feet saver. I think my feet will never be the same after this trip.
After the bike ride we took the train back to Gdansk and went to a wonderful tea shop that sells essential oils and herbal remedies. I bought some rose oil just because I love it. We ran into some friends in the tea-shop so we went to dinner with them. After that we wandered around for a while and then took the shuttle home at a fairly decent hour. It was another really nice day.
