Neil's Round the World Trip!
Hi! So today we all had a lie-in until 9ish, had breakfast and hopped on our bus to Puerto Montt. This is a large city in the south that has amazing views of 2 volcanoes and also the country's biggest fish market.
We arrived and to be honest, my first impression of the city was run-down, industrial and pretty ugly. The Chilean equivalent of Greenock. The city's economy is based on fishing so there are tonnes of seafood restaurants down by the docks. There were also handicraft stalls selling cheap alpaca coats, hats etc. I think I'll wait until Peru to buy stuff like that as it's much cheaper.
We all trooped into a seafood restaurant at the docks. It was really nice inside and they had a local playing guitar and belting out hits like "Guantanemera". I ordered salmon and potato mash; the salmon was huge and really tender. Nick and Sandro ordered curanto, a speciality dish in southern Chile. It was a massive bowl with: mussels, clams, pork, dumpling, and chicken. The meals were so cheap, only 3 pounds.
We walked along the main street and some of the girls got "Gringa" shouted at them because of their blonde or light hair. I went into a corner shop to buy some juice and nuts, the shop assistant's son asked me where I was from and that he liked my spiky hair. I had a tub of hair gum that I didn't want as it wasn't very sticky so I gave that to him. It was really nice to see his face light up, fudge hair gum is about as common as spiky-hair gringoes! Maybe the spike might take off in Puerto Montt.
We drove to the nearby town of Puerto Varas which was a lovely, picturesque city. It was established by German immigrants and you can see the German influence in the architecture, cuisine (schnitzel) and efficiency. We checked into our hostel and then went to the nearby supermarket while it rained heavily. Me and Nick decided to make burritos for dinner. We got a lift back to the hostel passing the huge casino, hotels and adventure stores.
Our meal was great and we made the girls really jealous. We then drank wine with Prade. Me, Nick, Bridget and Prade then walked to the nearby "Corner Bar". I ordered the Scotalian cocktail which was whisky and amaretto. It was actually really nice but the Pisco sour was horrible!
We then staggered back to the hostel and I drifted off to sleep at 3am.
