After heading to Holbox we reached the island by midday and checked into our hostel, Tribu. The hostel was amazing with lots of hammocks, lovely treehouse like dorms, a movie room and right next ot a little beach we had found exactly what we wanted! We headed straight down to the beach and found our spot for the next few days! With noone on the beach , white sand and stll waters I couldn't imagine a place much more relaxing! There were a few bars and restaurants in the town but we didn't go just staying in the hostel watching movies and reading! After 3 days of this I felt like a new person and was ready to take on the Whale Sharks!
Swimming with the Whale Sharks was one of the most breath taking experienes I have had. After a 2 hour ride to their feeding area we reached numerous other boat trips. But this didn't matter with about 50 plus shark fins swimming about the water inches from the boats! We took it in turns, two at a time, to jump in and snorkle near them. The sharks don't have any teeth but swim with their mouths wide open to swallow the plankton, but the vacuum cleaners of the sea didn't seem to react or see you at all and on numerous ooccasion definetly felt like I could of been swallowed whole! The sharks were close enough to touch and when one went to change direction I thought I was going to be knocked out by it's tail which was alot taller than I am! After all of us had 2 or 3 chances to get in the water for a while we headed of to catch out lunch! We dropped line fished and people caught lots, not me though! Don't know what I was doing wrong. I think it may have been my vegetarian vibe not letting me make my big catch, which I wasn't too upset about! Despite this the captain caught more than enough and as it was definitely a sustainable meal so I was happy to eat my included lunch of fresh cerviche prepared on board while we got taken to a small desert island. The island wan't really an island in the sense of the word I understand it as, it was all covered with water, however it was only 1 or 2cm deep in some places. It really was stunning and with lots of pelicans. We enjoyed snorkling and laying in the shallows while the captain prepared the fish, lime tomatos and red onion! The cerviche was amazing and so fresh! We then headed back to Holbox after a full filled morning and afternoon! I decided to dry off laying on the top of the boat. The captain said I could stay there just hold on so I thought it would be fine! After an hours ride gripping on for my life I was relieved to come down when we had a break to see the flamingos. The ride was amazing though! I couldn't see or hear anyone else, just see the ocean and flying fish, rays jumping out of the sea and two dolphins swimming just to the side of the boat! It was amazing, just rough up there! We stopped for 10mins or so to watch the pink flamingos in their natural habbitats and headed back to the island. I really enjoyed the whole day and will never forget it!
