As our first day on our own we felt abit lost but also were happy to have free time and took it easy enjoying a shopping day where we both bought something nice (boots and a bag!). After this we went for a nice meal and went out with the guys we met in our hostel room. We headed to the hostel party for happy hour then went to a local megaclub, club 69, where we enjoyed a rather peculia show - I'll leave the rest up to your imagination - which was a surprise! We stayed out pretty late but had a great time in BA!
After a pretty late night the night before we didn't do much, we both slept in and then caught up on some errands and got a nice lunch! For the evening we went downstairs and met up with a few people for another hostel party.
The next day we both got up early and headed out to the city tour bus stop. Here we drove around the city on the open top bus and saw all the main sites and learnt lots of facts about the city which I didn't remember longer than the bus ride itself! Once we had rode the bus round 2/3's of the way we got off in the Recletta neighbourhood where we were meeting up with a photography focused city tour. After getting lunch at the recommended cafe meeting point, which was gorgeous, we met the group and the 'guides'. After a brief presentation with some photography hints and ideas were were given 10 clues, for example: It's a dogs life, Latin Love, You don't interest me, Sound of the underground etc. In small groups we had to explore the area taking photos to answer the clues. After a few photos we got into the swing of things and in our group we managed to explore the city in a very different way, looking alot more closer at the culture, way of life and other things which were unique to that area. Once we had answered the clues (we had about 2 hours) we all met back in the cafe and groups our answers together and looked through all the photos with included wine, discussing what we liked, how they answered the clues and different aspects of Argentine life. As the guides were both ex-pats they gave us a great insight to the city and with one of them been a professional photographer also helped us a great deal with how to use the settings on the camera. I would really really recommend this tour, even if you don't like photography, it was called fotoruta and can be found in most hostels. After this we caught the bus back for the last third of the bus tour then cooked dinner in the hostel. We were both really tired after our long day so got an earilish night ready for our last busy day in BA.
The next morning, after breakfast we headed out to San Telmo, as it was Sunday the city has an amazing antiques market all day. It is famous here for the markets as the rich people of the city used to live here but as the sea level rose it started to flood encouraging the rich to move to the different neighbour hood of Recletta, leaving their possessional available for looting from the increasing number of imigrants. This history created a really special feel and a great market. It didn't have the usual things you now find at markets on holidays (fake football shirts, sunglasses and watches) but tradtional antiques and arts and crafts. We spent the morning browsing the stalls and stopped for lunch in a small cafe. We both really liked this area of BA. After lunch we headed over to La Bocca. This area has a reputation for muggings and other unsafe activities so we caught a cab straight to the centre of the district where it was safe due to the mass tourists that flocked there. However due to this the area was spoiled and didn't feel very authentic. The area is famous for it's brightly coloured houses, made from corregated metal and painted with left over ship paint (the area sits on the port). These houses were made by their inhabitants, which were imigrants, as they arrived to the city. The houses were red, yellow, blue, green, orange and purple and create a special backdrop to the area that is uniqe and is often used as a symbol of BA. Within these streets you can catch tango shows and other street performances, various restaurants and bars and market stalls. The area is gorgeous but as I said earilier due to its fame I believe it has been spolied but I would of loved to have visited before this around 30 years ago! After catching a cab back I had to get all packed and ready for my flight to San Jose, Costa Rica, as I had to leave the hostel at 2:15am! With a sad goodbye to Faye I caught a cab to aeroport ready for the next stage of my travels! Spanish School!
