We have made it to Australia!
Our flight landed just after midnight and rather than spend a night in a comfy bed, we thought we'd save a few pennies on a nights accommodation by sleeping at the airport. Needless to say, it wasn't the best nights sleep, but I think we each managed an hour or two before we left the airport sometime after 6:00am.
We arrived at the hotel an hour or so later but we were too early for our room. Fortunately, they let us have a shower and some breakfast which set us up for the day. Five minutes later, Sarah was passed out on the sofa.
Three hours later, she finally stirred and we were able to go and make the most of our one day in Melbourne.
We hopped on a train and sped into Flinders Street Station - right in the centre of Melbourne. We got off and wandered around Federation Square. This is apparently the meeting place for Melbourne. It has lots of modern looking buildings surrounding it filled with restaurants, bars, cafés and museums. We popped into the National Gallery of Victoria (we're not sure how that works) to look at some of the exhibits on show in there. These included some aboriginal art and landscape photography.
After going around the gallery, we left and walked through the city and headed north to the Melbourne museum. This is a fantastic museum with interactive exhibits from everything from dinosaurs to mental health. We spent hours in here going around trying to take it all in while fighting the fatigue. For anyone heading the Melbourne, this is definitely worth a look!
On leaving the museum, we headed back out the street where we hopped on one of Melbourne's famous trams to take us back to the south of the city and the Yarrah river. We strolled along the waterfront and back to Flinders station to head back to the hotel.
Tomorrow we are up way before the crack of dawn to head to the airport and on to New Zealand!
We've really enjoyed Melbourne and are definitely sad to be leaving so soon. There is so much to do here, it's just a shame we arranged the flights to New Zealand so soon. Just another place we'll have to come back to...
