We took another overnight bus to Byron Bay.. we just love the buses! We had a wonder around the town and the beach that day... Byron is a fashionable little place with a great vibe. We attempted body boarding but the waves weren't that brill, so we resorted to jumping through and over the waves... so much for surfing. We think this surfing is a little bit of a myth.. we have seen a lot of people laid on the beach with boards.. and the waves don't seem to be that great here for the pro surfers.. who knows where they all go to.
We hired some bikes and rode up to the lighthouse.. it was tough climbing the hill in the blazing heat. James was riding the bicycle like it was an off road bike... it was something Miss Daisy would ride!
We made a school boy error one night... we started drinking pretty early, ended up at Lala club with a group of people from our hostel, had more drinks and clambered into bed. The next morning we were up at 6.30am for a dive we booked two days prior.. oh what a mess we were in.. we turned up and struggled to get our equipment together.. anyway we boarded the dive boat and had a very rough 15min journey out to Julians Rock... I have never felt so ill on a boat ride before. We dived to about 18metres for 35min.. is was extremely painful and we both were just trying to concentrate on staying conscience. We saw a grey nurse shark behind a school of fish, and a few leopard sharks resting on the seabed. And we swam into a cave of coral, full of fish and squeezed our way up and out of it. Not long after this I felt like I was going to be sick, so at about 10metres I grabbed what I thought was James' fin, it turned out to be a very confused old Man.. oops! So much for having a diving buddy! Anyway, this man came to the surface with me whilst I regurgitated my cereal. James popped up not far from me, saw me being sick, so he was sick! Then we had to swim back to the dive boat through a load of pineapple chunks James had eaten on his pizza the night before.. nice! The skipper said you two have really bad sea sickness.. hmm.. we just agreed with him!
After the dive James spent about $30 trying to nurse himself better.. full English breakfast (half of it was wasted) and lots of Juice Boosts! He spent most of the day in bed. So I indulged in a scrumptious Mexican style jacket potato from the iconic spud bar on the beach front. I then spent the afternoon on the beach.. sleeping and talking to random people that sat next to me. This one middle aged surfer I swear had foundation on! But I later found out that it was zinc suncream that he was wearing, apparently surfers wear it, because it doesn't get washed off in the sea. And there was me thinking he was slightly strange! I then got chatting to this Kiwi couple that even bought me a drink.. it's great going places on your own!
One night we met up with a couple we met in Asia, Carry and Newton, we spent the night at their hostel watching an extremely crazy Canadian who looked like Bruno with a dodgy tash and huge black side burns. He was getting everyone playing drinking games, whilst jumping from table to table in a very colourful pair of man pants.. the next day we saw him on crutches.. he had a drinking accident involving bare feet and glass.. absolute fruit loop! It didn't stop him playing drinking games the next day on the beach in a pair of leopard print tight trunks.
