We had a scenic drive to Wanaka, although in heavy rain, there was lots of pretty rivers and waterfalls. We got to Wanaka and it was a lovely town, nice camp site that had free wifi (oh my god!) We decided (Becky forced Ash) that she wanted to go and watch the new twilight film and we had seen in the lonely planet about this cinema called cinema paradiso, where they show movies and there is big comfy sofas to sit on and an old Morris Minor. It looked cool and it was a very enjoyable experience in the end even though Ash moaned all the way through the film. He did enjoy the bar and also the intermission when you can buy fresh baked homemade cookies which were awesome! Sitting on a squashy sofa was great and of course being able to drink beer in the cinema was new to us!
The next day we had a relaxing day while taking advantage of the free wifi, so we left the laptop continually downloading films hehe (in the end we downloaded over 30GB of films)! We went for a swim in the lake at Glendu bay and just sat there on the lakefront all day sunbathing and reading. Becky swam in the lake but Ash did not fancy it. We also had free saunas and hot tubs on camp so that was lovely and relaxing too! But as it had been a really hot day the sauna and steam room were a bit uncomfortable so Ash went and watched American football.
Then next day we went to a place called Puzzling World, I think it really was a kids attraction but was full of adults! There was a big maze (which took us ages to workout and had to cheat to get out because we got bored), a room of holograms, a room of head sculptures where all the eyes follow you, a freaky room with a slanted cieling where you look tiny at one end and huge at the other, then a room that sets your balance off and makes you think you are sliding to the other side of the room, very weird place but pretty cool. Then we went to wastebusters which is like a big recycling centre and we bought an old filofax to work as a laptop case which Ash modified. It only cost $1 so we were chuffed with that. There was lots of old books but Becky could not find any she wanted. Then we chilled in town looking around the shops, which were all far too expensive, we think Wanaka was a pretty rich area judging by the shops and houses.
Then it was time to head to Queenstown, we had been looking forward to coming here as everyone we met said it was a cool place. We arrived and looked around town, the shops were mostly surfer clothes which is good as we are both in need of a new pair of pluggers(flip flops) from wearing them non stop for two months. Then we drank beer in the pub on the wharf and found a new drink for $6, a skittle bomb yummy! And you got a jug of beer (2 pints) for $10. Then we went to get a fergburger for tea which was divine and even better than Wendys in the US, huge huge burger which was very messy to eat(you all know Ash loved that!) We decided to go out that night and had some vouchers for the Casino so we went for some $5 drinks first in this cheapish bar we found then went to gamble, in the end we doubled our money so went to spend it all on more beer haha!
Our second day in Queenstown I (Ash) got up at 8am to go do the nevis bungy, a bungy jump from a cable car over a canyon and the total drop is 440 ft with 8.5 seconds freefall (along time when hurtleing face first towards the ground) over a 500 ft gorge. I absolutly loved it and got a free t-shirt to prove how good I am LOL. As soon as I got back to queenstown I wanted to do another jump but instead I headed back to the campsite. Becky spent that valuable time while Ash was gone sleeping off her hangover in the van. Then we went out shopping and went to a shopping place in Frankton where we found a shop called the warehouse which sold all Primark clothes at double the cost. It was really some of the same stuff! So Becky got some much needed new leggings for $7 as all her others had started to gain holes. We also managed to get some cheap suncream - $15 not really cheap compared to home but cheap for here!
The next day we went on a day trip to Milford Sound which was a very long day but very special. We stopped in Te Anau on the way there and we had a pie for breakfast and sat by the lake. We both saw scenery we had never seen on the way, huge snowy capped mountains with waterfalls cascading down them. We stopped by a river where we saw Kea parrots scrounging for food from the tourists. They are the only alpine parrot in the world and were quite cheeky and bigger than we expected. We took photos as it was a scenic stop and drank the water from the river which we were told is some of the purest in the world. We stopped a couple times for little walks in the forest and by lakes just to stretch our legs as the journey there was 5 hours. We drove through a tunnel that was dug out of the mountain and went on a boat trip when we arrived at Milford Sound. We both really enjoyed the boat it was a 2 hr 15 min trip and we saw penguins, dolphins and seals along with waterfalls, mountains and even a fault line. When we got back to Queenstown we went for a few drinks and then straight to bed as we were knackered!
The next day we went on the Shotover jet boat which was really good fun. A free bus took us from Queenstown to the river and it was quite a short boat ride as it was so fast. Becky was really looking forward to this as she loves boats. We got splashed, spun 360 degrees, went really close to the canyon walls and the boats are able to operate in water 5cm deep! The rest of the day was roasting hot so we chilled out mostly in the shade of the van on camp as the sun is really nasty here due to the ozone layer. That night we had a pizza from fat badger and it was HUGE!
We were gonna head off but decided to stay in Queenstown for one more day as we really liked it so we got some cheap tickets for the ice bar which was really fun and the cocktails were lovely! We went into the 'British lolly shop' (British sweet shop) and spoke to nice Yorkshire man who owned the shop, he told us that Cadbury put chemicals in the Aussie chocolate so that it does not melt so it makes it taste funny and we bought some UK dairy milk from him which was divine! We have been eating grose chocolate for months! Then we went up the Gondola and saw a haka show. The gondola was pretty scary cable car that went really high up a mountain but the rewards were great views of Queenstown and beyond. We saw a Haka show up there which was really good, the Moari dances are pretty scary and freaky sometimes. It was good to see the dances and hear some Maori stories but Becky did not partically enjoy the part where they got everyone up on stage to join in! We then had a drink in the bar after the show and Becky tried kiwi fruit wine which was pretty nice!
