Today was the day Santa's present was delivered. The girls had surfing lessons on Waikiki beach. While we waited for the instructor we watched the locals paddle in and out to catch the waves on the outer reef. Kawika arrived and the girls were stoked to have lessons from a local. After a bit of beach work they hit the water and headed for the waves. They played in the inside reef breaks, which were about 1-2ft. It wasn't long and they were both standing and riding in. Kawika towed the girls back out. It wasn't long before they headed further out for bigger waves. At the end of the lesson the groms came in and asked when can we go surfing again dad. They are hooked, and I guess we will be visiting the south coast from now on.
After the lesson we went to the mall for lunch and a bit of shopping. After picking up a few memories we walked towards Diamond Head. We started along the beach before heading in to the main street, with lots of shops. The tour took us past the cultural site in and out of the hotels and finished at the statue of Duke Kahanamoku. He is the godfather of surfing and a legend in Hawaii. On our way back to the hotel we stopped past the international market place which used to be full of authentic stalls selling food and gifts. It is now full of high end shops. We did find some of the old school shops in a side street and had a wander through.
The evenings entertainment was the Hilton Luau. On arrival we received a lei and Mai Tai. The feast provided was foods from different polynesian cultures across the pacific. After our meal, they danced and shared the stories from the Pacific triangle which is all the islands between Hawaii, Easter Island and New Zealand. There was hula, slapping dances and even a Samoan fire dance. The girls really enjoyed watching the dancers on stage, this included Penny, Stacey and Sue. After the luau, while the kids were getting ready for bed, we enjoyed a cocktail (a Waikiki Freeze) in the Tapa Bar while listening to live music - it was a great night!
