Meghan's Trip
Finally! It looks like I have got some pictures up for ya'll to take a look at. The other good news is that I got a new camera! Yeah! So, finally I will be able to take pictures without the hassle of my camera shutting off all the time. The past few days have included a lot of driving for David and I. We left Queenstown after I had an early and long run in the morning. I mention this because I went out to far and missed our appointment to ride the Shotover Jet. I guess it wasn't in the cards for us to experience that attraction. Anyway, we drove on down to Te Anau. The plan was to walk the 4-day trek into Milford. However, when we called to ask about the availability for the week, we were laughed at. The lady said that there was no availability till next season. Oh, well. So, we drove Milford road into the Sound. What a beautiful drive! Looks just like scenes out of Lord of the Rings. The smell of the rainforests, the fog, the water, and the snow was just incredible. Milford Sound was just as amazing. After a long day of travelling, we decided to cook in and just chill. The night consisted of reading books and playing card games. The lodge that we stayed at was nice, but it was really in the outdoors. The entire place ran off a generator and the power was shut off between 11 and 6 am.
The next day was our Milford Sound cruise. It was sort of expensive, but well worth the money. The boat took us right up to the falls and out to the Tasman Sea. I learned a lot about the sound's history such at they have over 100 small earthquakes each week there, which change the makeup of the sound. Also, the trees that live in the rocky banks take over 150 years to grow. After, we grabbed lunch and headed out Milford Road to do some hiking. The Key Summit 3 hour hike was the one that we set out on. The hike was great, but the view at the top was non-existent. The fog had set in and blocked the view. We headed onward to Te Anau for the night. Another early evening because the hiking was exhausting. There was a funny ad in the hostel that I thought I might mention:
ATTENTION LADIES:
TWO FINE LOOKING GUYS LOOKING FOR TWO PRETTY GIRLS TO JOIN THEM IN THE SPA (hot tub) AFTER LONG HIKE ON THE KEPLER TRACK WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
PLEASE APPLY TO (#######).
I thought it was quite humorous and as I was laughing at it, the two guys were standing behind me asking what was so funny. They said that they were disappointed because they had no inquiries.
Today we drove from Te Anau back through Queenstown up to Lake Wanaka. I bought a new camera along the way. We also stopped at four great wineries in the famous Otago wine country: famous for their Pinot Noirs. I got only a few bottles for gifts, however David went to town. I couldn't believe how many he bought. Every place was beautiful because it was harvest season and the leaves were wonderful golden colours. Then we planned to stay the night in Cromwell (the fruit picture), but as John said, "there was nothing there." Now, I am in Lake Wanaka. Yet, another beautiful place near the mountains. I think that we are going to stay for a couple of days and then head up to the glaciers. We have a glacier hike scheduled for Tuesday morning.
Hope all is well with everyone at home. Love, Meghan
