Meghan's Trip
Hey everyone! Well, I am exhausted right now. I will explain why in a few minutes, but let me tell you what has been going on for the past few days first.
Lake Wanaka was a beautiful little town. I had a really good time while staying there. On Saturday I went out on my own because David and I wanted to do different things. I ran into a really cool girl, Beck, from Seattle. She has been working in Sydney for the past year though. We walked to the Puzzle Word on the outside of town. It was just a big playground for kids, but we had a great time going through. There was an Ilusion room and a life size maze, which took us 45 min. to go through. Then we got David to drop us off at the Diamond Lake hiking trail. It was a beautiful and very muddy track up a mountain. The view from the top of Lake Wanaka was wonderful. After David picked us up we got ready for dinner. We also met a group of guys from Israel, who just got out of the army. We all hung around cooking and had some interesting conversations. I don't know if I have mentioned that David is a wonderful cook. I feel like I am travelling with my own personal chef. Anyway, Beck and I went to this small theatre in town that had couches as seats inside, an old car to sit in, and a cafe. We saw Good Night, Good Luck. Great flick!
Sunday was a driving day. That was all David and I did. We left Wanaka with the intention of getting to the glaciers by late afternoon. However, little did we know there was a huge landslide on the only road into the west coast. So, we pulled up to it around 11:30 and didn't get through till almost 4:00. It was unbelievable. There were a few hundred people waiting by the end of the afternoon. They started clearing it with only one truck, but more came as the day went on. There was this really funny Aussie guy and his family who were cracking us up. He kept saying, "aww! I reckon it will be just another 15 minutes."
Well, after all that we arrived at Franz Josef late just in time for me to set up my tent, David to get set up in his room, and grab a pizza and a pint before bed.
Monday, we drove to Fox Glacier. The walk up to the terminal face wasn't too bad. It was so beautiful, I couldn't believe how close you could walk up to it. It was interesting to see how much the glacier had melted since years prior. Then we drove over to Lake Matheson, nicknamed the mirror lake. The track around it was about an hour and a half. The reflection of the glacier and Mount Cook was incrediable. After all that, it began to rain and rain and rain. So, I didn't do much else for the rest of the day. We cooked a great dinner, played cards, watched a movie, and met a few new friends. Wouter, from Holland is the most worth mentioning.
Today, we prepared for our long day of hiking the glacier. That is why I am exhausted right now. Wouter actually ended up being on our trip. He brought alot of hummor to the trip for everyone. I think that Garth, our guide, was sick of him by the end of it. We were gone from 11:00 to 6:00. It was a long day and a hard workout. The glacier was wonderful! Sometimes frightening though. Ya'll would have been proud of me crossing these tight trails and tiny bridges that were really high up. We hiked up to almost 240 meters. There we sat and had a packed lunch then made our way around some more before heading back down. I think that Garth got lost for awhile there because we ended up being up for longer then we were suppose to. On the way down, I was walking right behind Garth and were looking through this long crack in the ice, when all of a sudden some of it fell off and dropped to the water below. Wew! I scared the crap out of me. The hike was well worth the money! I will never forget the experience.
Going to take it easy tonight and then we are leaving tomorrow to head further up the coast.
