Ko Phi Phi, 25/10/06
As soon as we stepped off the pier we could tell that Phi Phi was gonna be a completely different kettle of fish than Koh Lanta. The pier was a hive of activity with touts waiting for unsuspecting travellers, steering them towards pricey accommodation.
We happened to have met up again with the two Swedes we'd met on the way to Koh Lanta on the Phi Phi boat. We thought that we'd have more luck finding a place if we stuck together so after a bit to eat it was back on with our fabulous packs-sweat dripping from every pore, Kirst was lagging slightly so me, being the fantastic friend I am took hold of her day bag and onwards we went. We were fortunate enough to meet a brit who could tell us what direction we needed to head in for budget accommodation. We walked for about 15mins and decided it was silly all luging our stuff around so the Swedes left their stuff with us and went in one direction and I thought I'd have a little look in another direction. Anyways to cut a long story short we found a room at the Sasha guesthouse for around 2 pounds a night. Quite a bargain for Phi Phi!
We spent our time on Phi Phi mainly exploring the shops and stalls and wandering around the beautiful beaches. Unable to sunbathe with aburnt back and various other burnt bits it was pretty frustrating. We also whiled away a few hours playing connect four with a elderly toothless Thai guy who ran a Irish pub-he could speak a word of english but seemed to be having a good time (Kirst is the connect four champion of Phi Phi!)
We had lovely meals right next to the beach, such a amazing atmosphere and so beautiful. We also managed to pick up a couple of books-definately one of the best buys. It's so cool to have something good to read at the end of the day or on long journeys or when you can't stand the sight of your travelling companion any longer! (only kidding). Like I said earlier Phi Phi is beautiful, very busy-so many british people, almost felt like a slightly more upperclass Benidorm with lots of themed bars etc.
Further into the island you could see alot of building work going on probably as a result of the tsunami-it was weird to be there after having seen so much footage on the news back home.
We only ended up staying a couple of nights since time was of the essence with so many other places to go visit-next stop Koh Samui!
We love and miss you all loads
Kirst and Jules
