I woke up at about 7am to find us just outside Valparaiso. We stopped at Vin del Mar, which was the beach town but it didn't look that nice, before finally arriving at Valparaiso at about 8am.
We took a taxi to our hostal, where we dropped off our bags as the room was not ready. The receptionist suggested somewhere that would be open for breakfast so we decided to go there. It was a short walk away and the lady suggested to take the ascentor, which were the lifts people used as it was very hilly.
It was really quiet in the morning and the restaurant wasn't open yet so we walked around a little. The city was bohemian and all the houses were different colours and the streets covered with great graffiti. Shivani said it reminded her of a rough San Fran. Either way it was quite cool. After walking around a bit we went and had some breakfast. We sat for a while just chilling and after decided to go the hostal to see if our room was ready.
When we got there it wasn't, so we sat in the common room and Shivani read a magazine while I blogged. The room did not get ready so we decided to go on a walking tour that was advertised in the hostal. On our way we saw another sign for it which showed it was much more expensive. After getting to the meeting point and speaking to the guide we decided to do it ourselves as I kinda worked out the route he would have taken us on.
So we set off around the city taking in some great views from the miradors (viewpoints) and seeing some really good street art. We took a slow walk and it was very quiet. At one point we were followed by a dog for about 15 minutes. He didn't do anything but he made us feel uneasy.
After seeing the top of the city we made our way down towards the port. It was a really long and steep descent. On the way we saw an artist painting some steps which was pretty cool. Reaching the bottom of the hill we found a much busier city and after stopping at a supermarket and buying some fruit we took a trolley bus that took us to the other end of the city.
Here there was another lift that took us up to some really good views. From here we tried to walk back to our hostal but ended up not being able to get across to it. We had to come all the way back down the hill again and by that time were knackered so just took a taxi to the hostal.
Getting back we got access our room which actually really nice having a small kitchen too. The best thing was that it had good shower. I stunk so jumped straight in. It felt really good to be clean and after Shivani had hers we just chilled for a bit.
It was now late afternoon and we thought we would head out for an early dinner and one of the places recommended in the book. On arriving we found it didn't open till 8pm so found somewhere else down the street. The place was an art type cafe and had a small menu. We ordered a bottle of wine, which was quite nice and good value, and I had eel and Shivani ravioli. After we had some cheese while we finished our wine.
It was Saturday night but still early and we decided to go back to the hostal and relax a bit before going out. Valpo was supposed to be a lively city but didn't get going till late. We sat on the bed watching tv but the red wine and long day had made us tired and we both ended up passing out. Our thoughts of going out passed away and port area where the bars were hadn't looked that nice during the day so we ended up just sleeping through.
