We woke up in morning feeling pretty tired but got up and ready for our wine tour. We would be picked up at 9am and after shower and nice breakfast of crepes and pastries we were picked up for our trip.
There were six others in the group, which was mixed but all English speakers. Our guide Vicky spoke very good English and quickly have us some history and info about Mendoza before hitting our first winery.
We went to Mendel where they showed us around and explained the wine making process before we went to the tasting room. This was a small boutique winery and they did everything in a traditional way. We got to taste 4 wines all of which were very good, with the 2009 malbec being my favourite.
We then moved on to Dante Robino, which was a much more modern and large scale winery. They had a very impressive room with large casks which they used for exhibitions and entertaining. They also made sparkling wine there and they explained how it was made before we tasted some. We then went to the tasting room, where we tried 4 further wines the most interesting being the bonarda which will apparently be the next big thing.
We then moved on to Tapiz where we would have lunch with wine pairings. This was another famous vineyard and the meal was also very good too. The starter of ceviche and pickled chicken was lovely and the steak that came for main was huge and really tasty. Shivanis pasta wasn't so good but the dessert was really nice too. The wine was good but I don't know exactly know how good the pairings were.
After all the wine and food we were now sluggish as we moved on to the last winery. This one had a really impressive cellar and a room with a huge table and grill for entertaining. The wines here were supposedly more complex but I didn't like them as much but maybe I had too much already.
After this visit we made our way back to the hostal, and I went for a nap. Waking up I joined Shivani at the mate (traditional drink, drunken in a clay pot and through a metal straw) tasting before heading out to dinner. I wasn't that hungry but we ended up at a posh restaurant that was the treat yourself one in the book. The food was really good, especially the baked Camenbert that Shivani had to start.
After dinner we walked back home and went to bed. Shivani fell asleep reading her book but I couldn't sleep, maybe it was the mate. I thought about the skydive again and eventually fell asleep.
