Copenhagen is buzzing with happy people. Locals, tourists, kids and the odd pooch out in the sunshine. First stop was my morning latte. As I walked down Vesterbrogade there was a crowd gathered with fun music playing. Intrigued I crossed over to check it out. The Hamleys Toy Store crew were getting the crowd going with a dance workout. A good way to start the morning (and draw the kids in-store).
I've decided to embrace my tourist status and headed for the City Hall Square to pick up the small train and take the city tour. At dkk 50 it's good value and slightly different to the normal tours. Plus my current travel raison d'être is all things by train!
Today the city seemed more colourful. It weaves through the cobble streets in and out of interesting buildings, along the waterway, past tiny colourful shops and rows of tablecloth bedecked tables. As we passed an Italian restaurant, the owner extended his hand to high-five some of the train passengers. He started with one guy and then decided to high-five virtually all the passengers on the right hand side which brought on a chuckle from everyone! I did the full 40 minute circuit and then walked from City Square to the water area to pick up a boat tour. The tourists are out en-mass today, so the queue was lonnnggg. I have to say though, I'm glad I made the effort as touring the harbour was great. The boat made it's way around the main harbour taking turns down small water inlets. We got to see large cruise ships, navy vessels, small yachts and the shoreline architecture. We of course saw the Little Mermaid but only from the back. The tourists on shore were taking shots of us and of course we returned the compliment. In the water inlets the waters were high. The flat boat had to scrape under a number of the bridges especially near the end of the trip as we neared our jetty. My pictures can be seen here http://goo.gl/GviVdD
It was now around 2pm, feeling peckish I was hunting for a suitable eatery. I looked up an alley way. Intrigued by the attractive setting and bright green umbrellas I decided this was my place - the Royal Smushi Cafe. I'd actually seen a video on YouTube that mentioned this cafe, so I'm glad my wanderings brought me here. It's an enchanting cafe, light airy with chandeliers, art pieces, a picture of Royals and a mix of high bench type tables and pink sofas. The smushi takes inspiration from small Japanese sushi and applies it to the famous Danish Smörgåsbord. I ordered the vegetable fricassée and a cafe macchiato. I wish I'd ordered two. It arrived like an art piece... and the taste. All I can say is YUM! This version was similar to a vol-a-vent but beautifully crafted with delicate herbs, small carrots, red cabbage and other gems.
At around 3pm I headed to Central Station with my luggage and caught the train back over the bridge to Sweden. Next stop Malmö.
