Pyrtaneion was ntered via a coutyard surounded by columns. The buildiing was the office of the city'sss lading dignitary. Its main room was usd for banquets for dignitaris. The 4 famous Roman copies of the statue Artemis were here.At the centre of the building was the Temple of Hestia which contained a sacred hearth that was never allowed to go out to represent all the hearths in Ephesus. Today, only two Doric columns remain from the six original.
