On this site was a civil hospital that was stormed by Abel Santamaria and 60 others in July 1953. They were later tortured and killed. In October 1953, Fidel Castro was tried in the nursing school for leading the attack. Here he later made his famous "History will absolve me" speech. The cubist fountain has the faces of Abel Santamaria and Jose Marti.
