Auschwitz I Camp Kitchen
Construction occurred from July-September 1940, but expanded 1941-3. There were 12 chimneys. Near each stood 4 steam kettles holding 300-500 liters. The kettles were cleaned 3 times a day as they were alternately used to prepare "so-called" soup, tea, and coffee. In one wing there were rooms for washing vegetables and peeling potatoes. The cellar below was used for food storage. The kitchen work squad was considered one of the better ones as the prisoners had access to extra food which could not be controlled by the SS officers.
