Camp authorities appointed "functionaries", either block elders or "capos" who were ruthless in their supervision and had much power. Initially these were specially selected German criminal prisoners, but as the camp expanded other nationalities were appointed. Some members of the resistance were appointed and used their positions to try to ease soe of the terror of the camp.
