Edmond J Safra Grand Choral Synagogue
1894-1917 The Committee of Ministers in 1869, closed all the old chapels. Synagogue hall for up to 1,200 people, could not accommodate the entire Jewish population of the city. Premises designed as service, and even cellars were used as chapels. In addition, because of the distance that exceeds the permitted on Saturday for walking, Jews on the margins were not able to perform religious rites. During the 10 years the Jews of St. Petersburg margins applied to the authorities for permission to reopen the Chapel closed in 1894 after the construction of synagogues, and invariably were refused.
