Edmond J Safra Grand Choral Synagogue
September 1, 1869, Emperor Alexander II approved the resolution of the Committee of Ministers allowing Jews to build St. Petersburg synagogue to replace the existing chapels. Initial funding was by donation, half for permanent seats, half for construction, followed by loans from a bank and wealthy Jews. In 1870, the community purchased a house on the Embankment to be used as temporary space during construction. Several sites were located for construction, but construction was refused by the Chief of Police. After 10 years a permanent site was purchased.
