Jewish Cairo
Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue (Gate of Heaven) also known as Temple Ismailia and the Adly Street Synagogue. It was built in 1905 in a style evoking ancient Egyptian temples and was once the largest building on its boulevard. Nessim Mosseri with his wife Elena (nee Cattui of one of the wealthiest families in Cairo) donated part of their garden for the construction of the synagogue. It was built to serve Sephardic Jews.
