Jewish Cairo
Rav Moshe Synagogue or Maimonides Synagogue - A synagogue has existed at the site since the 10th century and was subsequently named after the famous Jewish philosopher, rabbi and physician Maimonides, after his arrival there in around 1168. I found this synagogue late in the afternoon after a walk through streets of old Islamic Cairo. It was closed, but had been restored with an 18-month project of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities involved a team of Egyptian experts ranging from art restorers to mechanical engineers at a cost of nearly $2 million. It is one of 11 synagogues in Cairo.
