What in the world would be worth hiking 47 km, climbing 4200 m above sea level, dragging ourselves up and down millions of stairs in rain, fog and with altitude sickness....? That my friends, is Machupicchu! One of the seven wonders of the world, finally appeared to our sight as the sun broke through the heavy fog. Wooooooow. We´ve seen it so many times, in movies, pictures and post cards--but setting our feet into this unbelievable manmade construction--still blew us away. These millions of stones have been carried by incas, from further away than where we started our hike.
We went with an awesome group of 16 adventurous backpackers; 6 Norwegians, 2 Swedes, 3 Australians, 1 Argentinian, 3 Canadians and one Dutch. Our guide was super chill and fun, and addressed himself as "The Great Puma". In our opinion, who really deserved the nick name Great Puma--where the 20 porters RUNNING the Inca trail with 25 kg backpacks (bigger than the guys carrying them!) only to set up a camp and cook lunch and dinner for us. They were pretty amazing, and they made the experience of living 3 nights in the wild mountains a pleasurable experience for us all.
They most interesting part of the Inka ruins is that the rocks (which make up all of the Inka constructions) are carried by men, over large distances and up to high mountain tops, without using wheels! The ancient Inka culture is fascinating and is shown through these amazing ruins. Yet it´s a mystery to contemporary historians and scientists, how such wonders have been made by human beings.
Walking, or should we say climbing, the stairs that led the way to Machupicchu was an unforgettable experience in itself. The peruvian nature holds treasures that takes your breath away. Green and lush mountains stretched through the clouds and surrounded us at all times. The morning fog created a majestic view and a unique atmosphere. Despite the occasional struggle we all felt by the thin air and the high steps--we could not help but thinking; "This is SOOOOO worth it!"
Allright! We hope you enjoyed our poetic blog entry--cuz´there won´t be many more of that kind! Tomorrow we´re heading for BA (Buenos Aires)! That means that our days without showering, our dirty and wet wool clothes are HISTORY! Fiesta and sophisticated city life--here we come!
So watch out for some good party pics and club reviewes--on our next "Buenos Aires; Special Edition"--only for you my friends (that´s some internal humour from our tour guide), makes sense?
