Hi there. Remember us. Welcome to the last and final post of Mlungu Trek.
We've now been back home in joyful Johannesburg for just over a week. It's good to be home and especially to see our family and friends that we haven't seen for so long. Fortunately for us, Johannesburg doesn't change much which makes it quite easy to settle back in and get back to our rhythm. But, that said, looking back and thinking that a little over a week ago we were hang gliding over Rio and watching the sunset over Ipanema Beach makes it quite hard to really settle down so quickly. We're not disappointed to be home, but we do miss being out there and having a new adventure or place to see every few days. Luckily for us, we've been able to continue the trek spirit since we've been back as we've been able to throw ourselves into the preparation and excitement of our good friends Yoav and Varanna's wedding which was celebrated over this past weekend. Not to mention the usual drinking extravaganza that we've become accustomed to and that goes along with these celebrations.
As expected, we get a lot of questions when we talk to people. One of the common questions that we've been asked is "What now?". As for Mlungu Brett, this answer is quite easy as he'll be back at work in about a week and a half. As for Mlungu Darren, the answer is not as clear as his road is still open and his passport still has some pages to be filled...maybe Australia next...hmmm.
The most common question's that we've been asked though are: "Is there any where else you could see yourselves living?"; "Which was your favourite place?"; and "What was your ultimate highlight?".
So let's unpack these one at a time.
Places we could see ourselves living... This is a tough one cause we didn't spend enough time anywhere to really settle in and get a feel for what living there would be like. The places that do come to mind that could be interesting to try live in for a short time at least would be Manhattan (we know this one's quite obvious), Barcelona (we'd be prepared to learn Spanish) and Buenos Aires. America is generally a great place and given the language similarities, and that we could easily learn to speak American, most of this country could be appealing. London, has some weather problems but is a great place and we already have family and friends living there. Most of Europe unfortunately has some language problems for us and recently some economic problems too but there are some great Scandinavian cities that really go a long way to show us how good first world countries can be - if only they weren't so cold. We could even look east at the remarkable Hong Kong and Shanghai. In truth, though, it would be hard for us to beat the lifestyle and weather of good ol' South Africa.
Our favourite place... This is also really hard as we've seen so many places. There is no one single place that we could pick as our favourite. There were definitely places that surprised us and were unexpectedly really great like San Diego, Austin, Reykjavik (Iceland), Liverpool, Budapest, Granada, Siem Reap and Buenos Aires. Then there were places that were great for different things. For example, great cities are Manhattan, Chicago, London, Stockholm, Paris, Beijing, Hanoi and Buenos Aires. Then there are great beach towns like Rio, Florianapolis, Barcelona, the Greek Islands, Koh Samui and Miami. There are places with incredible and interesting nature like the Badlands in America, Hopfgarten, Lucerne, the Amazon Jungle and Iguazu Falls. And then there are brilliant party places like Vang Vieng, Austin, New Orleans, Liverpool, Vegas, Prague, Koh Phangan and Koh Phi Phi. So you can see, it would be really difficult to pick one place and one place only.
And lastly, our highlights... There are so many of these but we've tried to pick the really exceptional ones to us. We put these together in a list in date order:
· Kumas Corner's burgers in Chicago
· American Contiki - Northern Adventure:
o Snow in Yellowstone National Park

This trip has been the craziest, most brilliant and most eye opening thing that we have ever done. We could not recommend travelling enough, whether in a big hit like we've done, or in small trips in your own time. Everyone really should get out there and see and experience what the world has to offer. There are amazing, beautiful and inspiring things to see out there. But it's not all roses and there are also places that are difficult to visit and things that are difficult to see. It's all part of expanding your mind and understanding the world, its history, its culture and its future. But one thing is for sure, there is something for everyone out there. And please let us know when you're heading out there cause we'd definitely be happy to join...if you would be willing to let us tag along, of course.
So, for the last time, thank you for joining us on this incredible, once in a lifetime trek around the world. We hope you've enjoyed following us as much as we've enjoyed taking you around with us. All that's left to say is: good bye, cheers, ciao, adios, bless, au revoir, adyo, totsiens, farvel, na shledanou, szia, tshuss, andio, lakon, sok di du, tam bit, zaijyan. And of course for our very last time...
Trek on...cause we know we definitely will be...Brett and Darren
