We cast off at 06.00 which is a great time to get up and see the surrounding area and carried on upstream to Yandabo village. We went for walking tour of a village famous for making terracotta pottery from the river bank clay. We were showed the pottery making process at various stages from throwing the pot on a potters wheel being driven by someone using their feet. They are then patted into shape using a type of wooden board along with a pattern by the same method. After they have dried in the shade for a while they are stacked into piles and have wood, straw and peanut shells poured around them, once ignited the old ash is put over and a kiln is created. These burn for two days and take a day to cool down.
Rest of the day was spent on board as we cruised up river along with a Mynamar custom presentation on how to wear the Longyi which is the cloth they wear and how the ThanaKha make up is prepared and used. This is the stuff they put on the face as a sun block and is also supposed to make them attractive! Thanaka is an ancient skincare formula made from Thanaka or "elephant apple"tree whose bark is rich in skin-protecting tannic acids and whose fragrance has been likened to the aroma of sandalwood. The cuttings are sold in their natural state, as small logs, along with a disk shaped stone slab called kyauk Pyin. The bark is ground over the rough , dampened surface of the stone to produce a silky yellowish-white cream.
