To get to Hungary we cut across the corner of Slovenia, it wasn't far into Slovenia, but it was obvious we had left Austria. We stopped for lunch briefly and then we were in Hungary.
There is something about Hungary that we like, it is hard to put a finger on it, but there was a lot less traffic, the towns are clean with lots of flowers around houses and in parks. The maximum speed on the roads we ride is 90kph, though like most places, some drivers choose to ignore this point.
We were heading to a campground on
Lake Balaton where in 2012 we met a Hungarian family that really looked after us and we are still in contact with. They had told us they were heading back to the same campground for the weekend and suggested we meet up with them there.
We arrived on the Friday and they arrived Saturday afternoon, so we had some time to ourselves before they arrived. This might sound a little odd, but once they arrived we knew they would be feeding us lots of food and alcohol. So we made the most of our time before they arrived by swimming in the lake and walking around the area.
We were right about our friends, Saturday night was spent drinking and eating, they just don't take no for an answer. When you say you're a non-drinker, they just pour you another of their homemade Pálinka! When you say you have enough to eat they say 'no' and put more food out on the table.
I have mentioned a few times now about how we have managed to avoid the bad weather, well Sunday afternoon it finally caught up with us in the form of a thunderstorm complete with very strong winds. We had already put up out tarp when we had a few showers come through on Saturday, but we were not prepared for this storm! In the end I dropped the tarp down and we retreated to our tent where we took advantage of being trapped by catching up on some sleep, only to be awakened an hour or so later by a crashing sound near the tent. Looking out I saw the bike had fallen over, towards the tent, luckily I had parked it far enough away. It had been on the center stand and the ground had become soft from all the rain. By now though the storm had gone and on inspection of the camp there were quite a few people that had packed up and left, flooded roads and branches down from trees.
The following day was fine and we were able to clean things up and pack away our tarp. Our friends had now suggested that we visit their home in Tata so they could show us around. It was agreed that we would meet them there on Tuesday afternoon. So Tuesday morning we packed up and made our way around the lake and off towards Tata.

Jan I do get the 'too much', even though I enjoy wine and food. Sounds pretty dramatic in the storm!
Sarah Clarke So lucky the bike didn't fall on the tent and there was no damage to the bike
