We boarded our small boat in the shallow water outside of our hostel. Surprisingly, it was punctual. We had been expecting the usual, palms spread shrug of the shoulders where the locals say, 'Fiji time!' which they basically say to eradicate any fault at being late.
Sitting at the bow of the boat with a French man that was far too devoted to his GoPro, we skimmed across the mirror that was the ocean beneath us - it was the calmest water I had seen! Our boat ride lasted a brisk thirty minutes were the hot air was given the illusion of being cold as it rushed over our skin.
Bounty island looked like paradise when we approached it! The water was like something from a postcard and the exotic green foliage was hemmed in by white sand and banana leaf roofed huts or 'bures' as they call them here.
Coconut Joe met us on the water in his own boat and transferred our bags into his. We were welcomed onto the shore by a Fijian playing a guitar who was belting out a local song - it was all magically cliche!
Our hotel, enthusiastically named Bounty Island Resort, is the only building on the island. It consists of a reception, a canteen which is right at the water's edge, volleyball court, pool, dorm rooms and copious amounts of hammocks. The island itself can be walked around in a brisk thirty minute stroll. Chelsea was dancing around like an electrocuted swan, she was so excited. I have to admit that I was excited too, we really were in a utopia.
Having explored our dorm and set our things out in our own particular orders in our dangerously unstable bunk beds we gathered again on the beach for a snorkel. The water was pristine and offered incredible visibility. The ocean coral played host to a myriad of fish, the most common of which was the exotic looking parrot fish. These fish have hard beaks rather than mouths and you can hear them all scratching the coral in large shoals attempting to get some sustenance.
Brilliant blue starfish also adorn the sea floor as well as huge sea cucumbers which I am told can expel their guts on command if they feel threatened!
In the night Chelsea won musical statues like a hero against some fierce Chinese competition! She won a free cocktail for her endeavours and pranced around with her pina colada like it was a tiara. We spent the remainder of the night playing cards and generally relaxing as the sun seemed to have sapped most of our energy.
