So, enough with the night trains. Turns out not all night trains have sleeper cars. This one left (theoretically) at 11pm and had some very uncomfortable old seats on it that I haven't seen the likes of since I was a kid travelling here. The train was packed, as in some had to be out in the aisles on little seats that fold down from the walls. I'm sure they slept just fine. Then, we sat in the train station for 2.5 hours after our departure time with no sign of any staff on the train let alone an explanation of any kind. Typical Italians. At one point, this scruffy guy came down the aisles asking for money. He was sweating profusely and kept standing on one leg thereby allowing the other to convulse a few times. He did this repeatedly, no joke.
Due to the late departure of my first train, I missed my connection. Not to worry, it actually turned out a bit better. I was supposed to get into Sapri at 3:45am and wait until my train came at 5am. I wasn't too stoked to sit in an isolated train station in southern Italy in the middle of the night, but I was prepared to do it. I had ideas about strapping my bag to my belt loops with a padlock and taking a nap until the train came. No need though. My ticket was flexible for that portion, so I just looked up the next train and hopped on. Dad got my message, albeit late, and was there to pick me up.
I got back to the house around 9am and after a quick visti with Dad and Antonella, went to take a much needed nap. Lack of sleep has definitely caught up with me. Afterwards, we packed a picnic and went to the local thermals. It was a perfect day to do this as I had apparently brought the west coast rains with me. At least for the morning, and though it got sunny it was never over 24. Afer the hotsprings (complete with mud) we went down to the river to have our pasta picnic. Dad and Anto have a Fiat camper which we made our food in. It was a lovely day and I had a fabulous sleep last night.
Today was nice and hot. We had breakfast and coffee on the deck overlooking the village down below and headed out to Diamante around 11am. We were on a mission to get me a phone. It's really no longer simply an inconvenience to travel without one, but also an issue of safety. At least that's what I told myself. Besides, it's an unlocked phone that I can used all over the world. After that we went for a walk around Diamante (which has murals all over the walls throughout the city), stopping for cool drinks at a little bar and then for pizza later on the beach. The rest of the day was spent napping on the deck, reading, working on my Italian and now typing this little note about my day. It's currently just after 8pm and I am sitting on the deck, watching the sun set over the ocean in my bikini.
I hope you're all well. Miss you and wish you could be here as well.
