Up at 1:45 for a 2:30am start off to the summit of Mount Kinabalu. No sleep so to say that none of us were feeling like it is an understatement. But after we started the daunting assent most of us kicked into gear. To start with there were steep steps and after 30 mins of that Mimi decided she had had enough and I reluctantly left her to go back with the guide. We all carried on for several more hours in the pitch black with head torches to show us the way. It is very very difficult to put into words how difficult this climb was but suffice to say that it is by far the most physically challenge thing any of us have done. Even Daisy would be broken by the end of this day. We finally reached the summit at 5:30am just before sunrise after 3 hours of even more challenging climbing. The ascent was 2.9km where we climbed 825m in height. The views were amazing and the satisfaction of completing the climb was massive. The only disappointment was that only 4 of us made it. Or so we thought... we just started down again and there was Mimi she had climbed all the way up on her own with the guide Edwin, it was a fantastic moment and showed what grit and inner strength Mimi has. After that moment of elation it dawned on us all that we not only had to get down to base camp but we then had to climb down yesterday walk as well. We got to base camp by 7:45am and then had breakfast and then off again at 9:30am back down to where we started. The final fly in the ointment was that it started raining an hour before we finished. So today we walked 11.8km and if you take the ascent and descent we covered 3,050 meters in height. We all coped with the altitude and no one had any real signs of altitude sickness. We then had some food and off to our next stop which was an hours mini bus ride to Poring Springs.
