Now to say the today has been amazing is a real understatement. We are all really privileged to have been to Turtle Island. We left Sandakan on a 1 hour speed boat ride to a small island (took 30 mins to walk around) miles from anywhere. Imagine paradise island with sand and corals, well this was well and truly it. We arrived 11am and after a quick lunch we hired some snorkeling gear and spent the afternoon in the water viewing all different fish all colour full and different sizes. Saw the Nemitz fish which was a lot smaller than I expected. The Girls all loved this activity and spent ages in the water snorkeling. As the day wore on they sat in the warm sea chatting to Sherrie and so Kate and I walked around the island in the sea it was about 1.3 km. A lovely time. Then after dinner it was time for what we had really come here for. We witnessed a Green Turtle (approx 1m x 85cm in size) laying its eggs. Then after collecting the eggs the ranger took us to the hatchery area where he counted and buried in a 70cm hole the 92 eggs the single Turtle had just laid and put protective mesh around it for the next 60 days before they hatch. Finally we took some baby turtles that had just hatched today (about 40 of them) to the sea and set them on their way in the big wide ocean. This is a conservation project to help build the numbers of turtles. It was an absolutely amazing experience, one that none of us will never forget.
