When we woke up we headed downstairs to have breakfast which is included in the price of the room. We had a baguette, omelette and strawberry jam. Once we finished we went back up to the room to pack together out bags. We checked out at 11:00 and left our bags in a small room near reception and chilled on our ipads until our taxi came to take us to the airport at 13:00.
We said goodbye to the sweet girl at reception who always threw us a peace sign to say goodmorning and began iur journey through the hectic streets of Hanoi. Our driver seemed to have an addiction to chewing gum as he was popping them open one after the other, his chewing noises were incredibly irritating as well. The airport was far out of the city centre and we crossed over a very long bridge over a river, i wasn't even aware there was a river in hanoi. We arrived at the departure terminal around 30 minutes later and had a smoke before proceeding to check in at Qatar Airways.
While we were lining up there were people getting their luggage wrapped in cling film by a special machine but we couldn't figure out why, maybe to not damage the case/bag but really it seemed pointless, especially for a flight that isn't even two hours long. Finally it was our turn in the que to check in and drop our luggage off. We got our tickets and proceeded to the departure gates.
We went through security and then straight upstairs to burger king as we were both starving. I got a bbq bacon and cheese burger meal and daniel went for a whopper. The meat in the fast food chains in asia tastes a lot better than back home, i reckon it's because they get all their beef from Australia and new Zealand. Once we had finished eating we went on the search for a smoking area and we found one.
It wasn't as small as the smoking room in Amsterdam which was a little bigger than a cupboard and there were a few people inside puffing on their death sticks. It makes you feel sick when you're in a designated place to smoke. It's much more enjoyable outside in the fresh air, and less claustrophobic. Once we finished our fags we went to sit down by our departure gate. There was already a big que so instead of standing and waiting we just sat and chilled until the line got smaller.
As we were lining up to board the plan a man behind us asked if we spoke english and we got chatting with him. He is from Switzerland but lives in Pattaya in Thailand and was in hanoi on business. We were greeted by air stewardesses who pointed us down the aisle to where our seats are. We passed through business class which looked so nice and we asked the man if his seat was there to which he laughed and said maybe when he makes millions.
We had the row at the beginning which meant we were right near the emergency exit with plenty of leg room. There was a camp looking air steward who looked exactly like clark kent, he would break hearts with that face of his. We went through the safety briefing and were handed small boiled sweets. Because there was no one sat in front of us, our tray and tv were slotted in the side of our chairs, so compact.
Our flight took off right on time and we were up in the air pretty quickly. We had a big selection of films and episodes to watch and i decided to watch a film called "the lucky one" with Zac Efron, i knew i wouldn't be able to finish watching it but i didn't mind. A stewardess came round asking if we would like a sandwich so we both said yes. It was labelled as vegetable calzone but was more like a vegetable samosa filling covered in pretzel like bread. Later on in the flight we were offered a drink so i got a glass of water and Daniel asked how much a coffee was and clark kent said it was free, everything was free. Like music to his ears.
We landed earlier than expected and headed through security to get our visa then over to baggage claim. It all went pretty smoothly and we headed outside and the heat hit us. It was way hotter than when we were here in january! We got a taxi to take us to Khao San road so we could find a place to stay. The drive took a little longer than expected as some roads were shut due to protests. We arrived at khao san and walked down one of the roads when we passed an indian man who welcomed us into his hostel to have a look.
It was dark and dingey and we passed a dormitory to get to the rooms. The dorm stunk of sweaty boys and it was generally really stuffy. We walked up the steps with no light and into one room which was 600baht. It wasn't very nice at all so we saw the 800baht room with air con which was just a box room with a bunk bed and a single bed. We gave the guy our passports but decided we didn't really want to stay here and £12 was expensive for what we were getting so we headed back downstairs and got our passports back. There wasn't even a bathroom with the room which was a big downfall.
We walked around khao san road to find the place where our journey began; four sons inn. When we got in we saw the price list and it was 650TB for a room with air con, perfect! We paid for the room and got our key for room 418. We took the lift up and when we got in the room it was nicer than the one we got the first time round. We dumped our bags down and had a shower before heading out into the crazyness of khao san road.
It was vet nostalgic and a bit sad to be back at the same place where our adventure begun. It was still just as busy with food stalls selling pad thai and fruit as well as loads of massage places. We were pretty hungry so we went back to our favourite food stall; the duck and rice for 40tb, less than a pound! We sat down on the plastic chairs as we watched him chop up the pieces of duck and plate up the steamed rice. It was just as nice as we remembered it, soooo good. The meat is so tender and the sauce tastes like heaven. Even the small bowl of broth tastes amazing with bits of spring onion and parsley. We ate this with a chang beer before paying him and heading back off for a walk.
There were lots of men advertising ping pong shows with a small card that read "p**** chopsticks" as well as a whole list of other things a woman would be shooting out of her vagina. Daniel bought a chang beer top as he regretted not buying one the first time round and then we went to get a foot massage. It felt like heaven and the smell of the cream was so good. We got a 30 minute massage for 120TB- just over £2! I never wanted it to end so we decided to get a traditional thai massage after as well.
We paid in advance and headed up the stairs passed the fish spa where people were getting their dry skin eaten by hundreds of small fish. We walked into the room and there was a sign to keep quiet. In the room were a dozen other tourists enjoying their massages and we were told to lay on the mattresses on the floor. The woman started on my feet snd legs by pressing her hands, arms and elbows up and down my legs. I thought my pelvis was going to crack as she was bending my legs up and then to the side. I then had to lay on my front and she worked my back, it was pretty painful but felt so good. She sat on my bum and pushed her palms into my back applying pressure in all the right places. She then put the pillow between her legs and i rested on it while she massaged my back and shoulders as well as my head and temples. It felt so good and relaxing.
I'd had a singha beer while getting my foot massage so i felt all warm and fuzzy and generally really relaxed when it was over, i just felt so chilled out. We continued walking around passed the bars heaving with people with massive towers of beer on their tables. There were lots of people dancing in the bars and on the path, like a big street party. We headed back to the hotel and chilled before sleeping.
