When we woke we decided to visit the temple just near our guesthouse. When we arrived there seemed to be some sort of fair for monks as there were dozens and dozens of skin headed figures in bright orange robes roaming the temple and it's grounds. I passed a small stall where blind people were selling various souvenirs, i fell inlove with a handmade small pink backpack with elephants woven into the fabric, though i couldn't buy it as it would be another thing to lug around with me on the trip. Reminds me of the perfect hot pink and gold anklet i spotted in khao san road but didn't purchase it as it cost 120TB, convinced i would see it elsewhere for cheaper; i didn't.
After the temple we decided to book an elephant trekking tour at a tourist information place in between our guest house and the temple. We found a good one which included an elephant trek through the jungle, visit to a tribal village, bamboo rafting, trek to a waterfall and another visit through a village. We seemed to get a good deal as we only paid 750TB for the lot. On booking, the women said not to tell anyone else how much we paid, bit weird but we knew it was the cheapest we had seen it so thought no more about it.
Both me and dan had been craving subway ever since we saw it on the journey from Chiang Mai station to our guesthouse. So, after the elephant trekking was booked we walked up to one of the main roads where subway is. We both opted for a 6 inch tuna sub, we are avid lovers of tuna and haven't really eaten it in thailand. I was feeling a bit greedy so was toying with the idea of going back up to get another, this time i would have got a "chicken piziola" sub: chicken, pepperoni, marinara sauce and cheese; yum! However, it didn't work out to be as cheap as we had hoped so we saved ourselves the cash and extra calories and bargained a tuktuk to a temple with a crystal and marble buddha.
We had wanted to go to the women's prison for a massage, but after a fairly long walk trying to find it, we were unhappy to learn that it was all booked up for the day and that you need to get there at 8:00am in the morning for the best chance! Seen as just across the road from the prison there were a few museums we decided to check them out. We ended up at the historical and cultural center of chiang mai. It cost us 90TB for entry but it was pretty worth it as there was a lot to read and it was air conditioned! After a browse in the museum we headed back to the guesthouse, a staff member was passing us with a bunch of bananas and handed both me and Dan one, very hospitable guy! I was having a smoke just by the stairs when a guy walked passed and said hey. Turns out it was the sane guy who struk up conversation with me and dan on the platform or Ayyutah station, what are the odds! He was a very friendly man named Malcolm from the Netherlands but currently living in Korea. We were discussing the Muay Thai boxing that seems to be a pretty big deal in Chiang Mai so we all decided to head there together after dinner.
Me and dan went to mcdonalds then met Malcolm at the big city gate for 19:30 where we proceeded into the boxing arena. When we first arrived we were pretty much the only people there, however as the minutes went by the sheltered arena slowly filled with tourists and locals ready to experience the traditional thai boxing. At the begining, there were a few fights between children ranging from around 6-13 which was a bit hard to watch. After these, there was a round where around a dozen muay thai fighters got jn the ring then began to blindfold themselves, the music stared and they were punching and kicking left, right and centre!! Was really hilarious to watch! After this there were a few more fights with older boys this time, thank god. But what we really came to see was a muay thai fighter from England named Paul. He was the last fight so we were eagerly anticipating to watch a briton fight against a thai boy. That fight didn't last no more than one round as Paul pretty much annihilated the poor opponent. We managed to get a picture with him when the match had finished, i was surprised at how short he was! Muscular nonetheless. We then made our way back to the guest house as we needed to be up early for an 8:30am pick up for our elephant experience!
