It was around 07:45 when i actually got out of bed, everyone was a bit creeped out by the sounds and when Aggy woke up, she discovered holes in her mosquito net by her feet. There were also big holes in the bottom of her backpack that she had in the bed with her. The scurrying we heard last night must have been a rat, and perhaps thats what the woman was insinuating when she advised us to hang the bags on the zip line to stop "creatures" eating them. Knowing that the rat ate through the net and into bed with Aggy made me regret every penny spent on the Tree Top Experience as from then on, i'll have visions of a rat crawling over my face and letting its tail pass in my mouth, yuck! Mr Roy was soon in our treehouse as we were taking a while to get ready so he came to collect us, strap us onto the zip line and lead us to camp for breakfast.
Everyone else were sat at the table eating breakfast by the time we arrived so we quickly grabbed a coffee from one of the pots brewing on the fire and sat down to wait for breakfast. The woman who warned us about the creatures approached us asking how our first night was but, she already knew the answer. She said she didn't want to tell us they were rats in particular because it would have put us off and that we should request to change tree houses like she had done, i guess her first night was in our room. The food arrived, brought out to us by one of the guides, we all got an omelette with spring onion and tomato, fresh tomato and cucumber and sliced baguette with REAL butter. Can i just say now how bloody ludicrous it is that in restaurants in towns, they don't serve butter but they have the real deal IN THE MIDDLE OF THE JUNGLE. While we were eating, the other group were putting their harnesses on ready for their last day at tree top explorer. We waved them all off as they left camp and finished our food.
As Dan and I are rationing our cigarettes we shared one with our coffee after breakfast, and as we were admiring the waterfall behind us, we spied the other group right at the top of the waterfall, they were absailing down which looked petrifying as hell but adventurous, a few of them waved at us from the top and i just remembered thinking about how hard the trek to get to the top must have been. Around 30 minutes after breakfast we grabbed our harnesses, which were all hooked onto specific numbers, put on our helmets and began to trudge out of camp and back into the wilderness. I knew that todays zip lines were a lot longer and higher than yesterdays because a few people from the other group had told us, so i knew i was up for a ride, and a hell of a lot of trekking.
We trekked to a few longer zip lines and each went accross and there was a line when two people could go at once. Fluer and Aggy went first togetger, followed by me and Dan. As we were stood on the platform i heard the girls shouting something over to us but they were so far away you couldn't hear them, this made me soo nervous but after the go ahead from the guide we swept off the platform together suspended over the green jungle. We were travelling quickly so didn't notice the broken tree branches close below us and so we smacked against it, still suspended over the jungle and zip lined to the other platform. It didn't feel like it, but during the "collision" i pretty badly grazed the bottom of my left leg which was now bleeding, but it was nothing major, so we continued to trek.
After a good 30 minutes of trekking we all stopped on a few rocks to catch our breath. Dan and Pe went off ahead to continue trekking while us girls had a chat with the other guide who was staring straight ahead wearing his aviator glasses, his name is Um. After a quick convo, we followed the path of the boys downwards over rocks and branches, there was no path infact, everything we walked on was natural and sometimes there would be a string tied between trees on the side to keep your balance. The trees made way and opened out onto a beautiful waterfall with different levels. The guide set up hammocks while we stripped to our swimwear and paddled in. There were massive rocks and small coves in the streams and we chilled for a while in the sun paddling. It was then lunch and all the food was laid out obto banana leaves like yesterday. We had the same food to eat except instead of fishcakes and beef jerky we got laos sweet sausage and pork. The sausages were so tasty and as i while tucking into one a wasp that had been bothering me stung he back of my arm. Fleur had to get the sting out but it was painful and itchy.
After lunch we did a lot more trekking and zip lining on realllyyy long lines that took around a minute to get from each end! My legs were aching pretty badly and my chest was heaving i could barely breath so i was delighted when i could see that we were heading for camp again, finally, no more trekking! We grabbed a coffee off the stove and was heading to the benches when Pe said that we are having a five minute break and then we'll go absailing off the top of the waterfall. As exciting as it sounded, my heart dropped and i was half debating whether to stay at camp and watch from a distance but i pulled through, got up and dragged my legs up the mountains, again. I was so tired i could barely keep up with the pace of the guys infront of me but i didn't want to hold people up so i got on with it. After around a 20 minute tedious trecknup the mountain we had reached the top of the waterfall. The view really was amazing, you could see camp and the long stretch of jungle beside it, all this while standing right beside water cascading down off the rocks. We took some photos and then watched the safety briefing. Aggy was first to go down then i followed. Our harnesses were attatched to a rope that was tied to a rock and there was another rope being held by Um back on the rocks by camp. As i lowered myself over the edge of the rocks i began to get paranoid about the safety as i must have been putting a lot of pressure on the ropes. After i walked down a bit i hung on the wire while i was slowly lowered to the bottom. It was a great experience with amazing views and an adrenaline rush.
Once everyone was down we headed back to camp where a new group had arrived so we hit he rocks by the bottom of the waterfall again. I went off on my own and lay on a big rock facing the waterfall. I must have been there for at least an hour and hardly anyone disturbed me which was perfect. When the sun was a few minutes from setting i met dan on the way back and we all sat down for dinner. We were joined by a Canadian family at our table who were very friendly, there were three young boys who had been pulled put of school for the adventure, lucky! One of the boys was so small i wondered how he managed with the zip lines and trekking. On todays menu was pumpkin soup, some beef dish and some pork dish as well as rice. It was delish but i didn't have much of an appetite so gave the rest of my pumpkin soup to Fleur. After dinner we stayed to chat for a while and look at the stars then we decided to head back to the tree house at around 20:00 so we had time to sort our things out before the lights went out. Mine and Dan's break sticks had disappeared but we didn't really need them for the wire to get to the tree house or for tomorrow which was lucky!
When i zip lined into the treehouse fleur and aggy both caught me so i wouldn't smack straight into the tree trunk. We all hung our bags on the wire to stop the rats, there were big black bags big enough to put our backpacks in so we put them in one of those. After a cigarette i got into bed pretty quickly, dodging the moths as i climbed in. We had all agreed that if we hear a noise, we'll also make a noise to scare the animal away. The lights went out and we lay still in darkness for a while until we heard animals. The reaction was hilarious, just different, random noises coming from every bed. I couldn't stop laughing! After around 30 mins i fell asleep thank the lord!
