This morning was Darryl time, so I hired a mountain bike (Scott 27 plus) and headed off up the valley from zematt. The trail heads through the village and into the country side winding it's way up the side of the valley past small farms and thru a number of small villages come sking/hunting cabins.
The climb took 90min climbing 600 odd metres on the way passing some hydro dams. This track takes you up beneath the matterhorn giving you a wonderful view of the leading ridges the main route being almost a staircase to the summit.
I stopped a chap riding down to get some directions but he did not speak any English - a pitty as he was hunting and I would have liked to talk to him about it.
Just below a place called Schwarzsee I crossed the river and began the descent to Zematt on the opposite side of the valley the track being very rockey in places requiring some walking and pushing, you share this with hikers but it was morning so not too many.
Arriving back in Zermatt I took the furnicular (a cable car underground ascending on about a 22 degree angle) up to Sunnegga and rode down on the new flow trail (amazing) it was only opened on Sunday by Gary Fisher and would rate as one of the best I have ridden.
Arriving at the bottom I was smashed and called it a day dropping the bike back. Zermatt would be the Rotorua of Switzerland for biking a must do.
