For our 12 days in Switzerland we have a Swiss Travel Pass that allows us 8 days of unlimited travel and discounts to some attractions. Today was one of our planned travel days with a ferry across the lake and a train ride up Mt Rigi which is 1899m high. We had a lovely day for it - though we found the light to be quite hazy over the lake.
The train ride up was steep - the trains have an extra cog wheel underneath that works like a gear wheel keeping the train locked into the rails, and the views were spectacular. We had lunch at the top and walked a few stops back down, enjoying the noise of the cow bells in the background (when the kids weren't talking!).
Partway down was a junction of two transport lines and we chose to take the gondola back via the other line for a slightly different view and experience. We had some time before the next ferry and sat on the edge of the lake cooling our feet which were a little sore from all the walking. Scott fed a swan and we saw some little fish in the lake. Darryl checked put some facts and found out that Lake Lucerne is around 200m deep.
The ferry arrived just after 2:30pm and it's route went straight to the Transport Museum. We had that on the agenda for tomorrow, but decided to change our plans and see it today instead.
We started with the chocolate attraction. We sat in a little car that moved us along a track in and out of decorated rooms with videos teaching us all about chocolate, the cars spun around and it was a great experience - with a few sample choclates to keep you smiling when it ended. Darryl amused us by calling out "Charlie where are you" during the ride (the kids got it but Kate didnt).
We were feeling a little tired but as the Museum was a little out of the way and we didn't want to come back again tomorrow we decided it was best to see what we could today. It was a phenomenal Museum, set up with so many things to experience and do. The highlights for us were definitely the helicopter and airplane simulators. Scott put the plane into a barrel roll (intentionally), while Sarah decided a nose dive would be fun. With the 3D simulator able to do a full 360 degree turn there were times when they were hanging upside down! This had the added benefit of fixing a problem April was having with headaches, which we think were caused by sleeping in a funny position on the plane - a lot easier than arranging a visit to an Osteopath or Chiropractor in a foreign country!
Scott also enjoyed the virtual crane that let you try loading and unloading containers. The museum was a fantastic place to visit and we stayed until just before closing time before heading back on the ferry for dinner at our accomodation.
Scott: I liked seeing how the chocolate was made and it was the best chocolate I have tasted. I loved the airplane simulator.
Sarah: The simulator was fun. When we were upside down it felt like we were going to fall out of the seats.
April: I am never getting in another vehicle that Sarah is driving! I think she was intentionally trying to crash us.
