Alrighty, so i've just completed the entire tour of the 'apple' better known as Van Diemen's Island or even T-t-t-tasmania! Arrived in Hobart and within mins of sitting down i had shaken the hand of many a local and even the police who welcomed me into 'The Natural State' or 'Holiday Isle' as it states on thier Rego Plates! Undoubtably the openly most friendly of all the staes so far, tho it does feel like iv travelled back in time by about 20years!
So headed up to Launceston where the 'famous five day' tour commnced! Was delighted to see that the guide was an Argentinian Rasta going by the name of Carlos, who turned out to be some boy!
Day 1: We headed across to Dove Lake and Cradle Mountain where the rock formation is surprisingly like a baby lying in a cradle, hiked up a near vertical cliff face using chains and arrived with my brazilian counterpart, at Marion's Lookout, overlooking Dove and Wombat Lakes, surrounded by the thickest forest and generally beautiful! On the way back down we saw a depleted waterfall and my first few wild wombats, with whom many a photo was taken! A wombat is kinda like a huge gerbil but the shape of a hippo and it has a ridiculously strong posterior bone which is protects its self with by putting its head inside a burrow and letting its tooch hang out! Hunted some tasmanian tigers, but unsurprisingly failed since the last sighting was 70years previous!
Day 2: We headed to Montesuma Falls, the largest waterfall in Taz at 104m! We then headed to some sand dunes, watched people sand surfing... much like snowboarding but on steep sand cliffs! Saw the longest stretch of water in the world... next stop south america.
Day 3: Lake St Clair.... could be the most romantic lookout point ever then saw a few swamp eucalyptus trees... the biggest hardwoods in the world! Went platypus hunting for 3hours with Antoine the french wombat but the little nibbers evaded us! Went out in Hobart to a dierbolical club called syrup!
Day 4: Feeling rough, headed up to Wineglass Bay, undoubtably the nicest stretch of beach iv ever come across... a perfectly carved white sandy arc with crystal clear turquoise water and thich forest everwehere enveloping it! Went up the coast to Bicheno where i stroked a wombat, watched a tazzie devil destructing a hare and hand fed kangeroos, one of which had a little joey in his pouch! In the evening, we went to watch the fairy penguins at night in the sanctuary, mouth opened as a little 'envelope' (called a 'raft' in the water) of 32 penguins waddle literally within a foot of us in a llokout spot and into their nests!
Day 5: Headed up to the Bay of Fires Beach (voted recently as the 2nd best in the world (slightly generous), climbed some rocks and then went for a pub lunch and met some beer drinkin pig! Headed back to Launceston to end the tour!
Day 6: Rented a car and drove to Port Arthur in the far south eastern tip which was a penetentionary for all the reoffending convicts! Very interesting indeed! Then drove back to Hobart, slept in the car on top of Mount Nelson!
Day 7: Woke up stiffer than a board (we'll keep it clean), drove up to Mount Wellington, the largest mountain in Taz, so much so that its peak was completed covered in clouds which made the view slightly hindered! WEnt to Cascade Brewery and had sampled nearly every product by 11am before heading back on the plane half cut!
All in all, an awesome place to get away to but not somewhere i'd ever fancy laying my hat permanently! x
