So the Death Railway trip didn't go quite as planned. Waking up at a reasonable time we decided to take the bus to Nam Tok, where we could carry on and go to the Hellfire Pass Memorial and then ride the train back to Kanchanaburi. However, arriving at the bus station, we asked a few people which bus to get on, so we hopped on, and arrived 2 hours later in a small town next to a National Park, which was 60km away from where we wanted to be! There could still have been time to make it to Nam Tok for the later train, but there weren't any taxis and the only bus back to Kanchanaburi was the one we arrived on and it wouldn't be back for an hour and a half. We gave up in the end and headed back to Bangkok after collecting our stuff. It wasn't a completely wasted trip though, the evening before we walked and saw the bridge, which you can walk over. The bridge itself isn't that special, but it is amazing to think what people went through to build it.
Back in Bangkok, we managed to meet up with Holly and Lizzy again for the evening, then the next day we met one of their friends from their earlier travelling and spent the day around Khao Sahn Road, before me and Will caught our already booked train to Chiang Mai. We had gone to the train station earlier in the day to buy the ticket. When they here where you want to go they all quoted a flat fare of 200 Baht, not wanting to use the meter which legally they were supposed to, but we arrived at the station and the meter was 50. I feel sorry for the people who just said 'fine' for the flat rate. The train left at 7.20pm, but we couldn't get a bed so we had chairs, which actually ended up being easier to sleep in that the beds we had from Surat Thani to Bangkok. We arrived in the morning, shared a songtheaw with some French girls going to the hostel next to ours, and booked in.
We had a walk around the old part of the town, seeing Wats and the moat around the town, before heading to the shopping malls and then back. We were both still tired and didn't feel like doing much so we stayed in the hostel for a bit, and coincidently we met 2 guys who we met in Krabi down in the South of Thailand. Our hostel does treks and cooking courses, so we booked a 2 day, 1 night trek for tomorrow and the day after, then the day after is a cooking course. I'll tell you all more about it when it has been done. We read that the Chiang Mai Zoo did twilight sessions, so head hailed our first Tuk Tuk and the ride was fun if not a little bumpy. When we arrived at the zoo we found out it no longer did twilight sessions so we got dropped off at the night market which was a lot calmer and laid back than Khao Sahn and a lot more pleasant. And now we are here, waiting for the rain to stop.
