Grand Canyon Ranch

Saturday 18th June
Picked up our 'cop car' from our Vegas hotel and headed out of Vegas and into the desert. Vegas is much more sprawling than we had imagined, but before we long we were in the searing heat in the desert. We made it to the Hoover Dam which is amazing, lots of James Bond movies filmed here!

Off towards to cowboy ranch in the Grand Canyon, we stopped off at Dolan springs which happened to be a christian town and didnt look like they sold much alcohol but luckily we came across a small shop that did!!! Off now on to a dirt track and finally reached our ranch, a working ranch with cattle and horses! Dinner in the dining room along with other guests and ate buffalo steaks (no other option!) followed by a sing-a-long around the campfire under the stars - no light pollution here so the stars were amazing!

Sunday 19th June
Headed off to see the actual Grand Canyon, obviously a tourist route so we were shipped to the edge by bus. We went and visited the 'skywalk' which is a glass walkway suspended 4000ft above the canyon, pretty amazing but a little unnerving. Also in the grounds we were warned on the bus on the way that there are no barriers so to be careful - a 4000ft drop was enough to keep us away however there was an entire family that decided to sit on the edge with a small baby - anything for the perfect photo opportunity!!

Spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the grand canyon where we saw a helicopter below us which was crazy! Decided against the ranch for dinner so headed to Diamond Creek for another light steak dinner which took us along route 66 which was a slight de-tour from where we were staying but worth it! Our road home was another story ... 30 miles in and the road turned to a dirt track which is suitable only for a 4 wheel drive car, not our 'cop car'! After 2 hours of seeing nothing, apart from one other car, a rabbit, stag and a coyote, we arrived back to our ranch a little shaken! A journey that we would not want to repeat again!

Monday 20th June
A long day ahead of us - drove back to Vegas for lunch, met Elvis then flight to LAX. Last steak dinner before heading off to New Zealand and a new continent ...
