Hi Everyone!
WOW the Amalfi Coast is the most amazing place on earth! Everyone going to Italy must make sure they have time to go along and spend afew nights here (thats you uncle martin and auntie Kerry)
So we headed off on our 3 day tour with around 50 people for a few nights along the coast. Our first stop was Pompeii which is something that Mike really was interested in checking out. We did a two hour tour of a city that was destroyed by a volcano in AD79 and preserved in more than 10 metres of volcanic ash. Bek found some stray dogs that she wanted to take home with her but had a feeling they wouldnt get through customs! The casts of the victims were very cool to look at as well. Check out the photos!
We then continued along the coast for another two hours and arrived in our base for the next two nights which would be Sorrento. We checked intou our tent cabins which were horrible. Covered in spiders, dust, ants and they were really hot. We had quick showers and then went on our orientation tour of Sorrento. Sorrento is beautiful, we checked out the most beautiful lookout over the coast and watched a bridal group get their photos taken. We then went to a limoncello tasting which was quite refreshing and did a touch of window shopping. We then went out to a four course dinner at a restaurant called Rossi Leone followed by cocktails and drinks at the campsite.
The next morning we got up (we had survived the tent) and went down to the port to catch our boat ride from hell to Capri. This is where the fun began, Bek had taken her motion sick tablets but they were going to be of no assistance. The seas were so high that Mike was certain that the ferry would tip. Bek asked him for help to get to the side of the boat to vomit but Mike was to busy holding on for dear life. Bek managed to make it to land after 25 minutes of hell and then continued to be sick into the nearest bogenvilla tree. No need to worry about me Mum, Mike has the whole "bek throwing up routine" down pact. It goes something like this. Get her water, get her tissues, get her hair off her face, touch her, dont touch her, remove all traces of spew.
Once Bek recovered we managed to head up to Capri. We needed to take a cable car up there as it is basically a giant rock. We went over to some gardens that had the most amazing views. We took some happy snaps and then went for a walk through the town. This is where all the celebrities come so there is prices to match!
We then caught another bus up the dangerous cliffs to Ana Capri which had some beautiful views. The idea was for Mike to take a boat tour of the blue grotto whilst Bek laid on the beach somewhere but since the seas were so rough we had a nice italian lunch instead. It was the best lasagne I have ever eaten! We were also going to take the chairlift to the top of the island but someone in our party of two said that the chair lift looked to rickety! And so we just wandered around instead.
We caught the ferry back in the afternoon to stunning Sorrento and got ourselves a gelati to help us cool down. We then went and spent the afternoon swimming in the pool at the campsite and feeling like we were now truly on holidays.
That evening we decided to boycot the group dinner and instead went and got our own dinner in the village. Before dinner we went back to the lookout and watched the sun set over the ocean and took some more happy snaps. We then went and found the best restaurant we could. The way we do this is to look for all the italians. This restaurant was huge! It was all across the piazza. There was a man singing and slowly getting drunker with his red wine to the crowd. Midway through our meal the whole restaurant starting singing this popular italian song. It was an amazing sight and the taste of the food matched the atmosphere! After dinner we strolled through the streets then made our way back to the campsite and had some drinks with the other people.
The following morning we got up early and headed along the coast abit more. We stopped off at Postiano and took some photos and had a group shot. We then went along the coast in our giant coach. Luckily we didnt die as the space between the coach and the edge of the cliff appeared to be very tight. The views were just stunning and we got lots of photos to show you but they will not do it justice.
In Amalfi we stopped off at a bakery that made the most amazing coffee we have ever had. Bek was also tempted to leave Mike for the smooth talking nonno who owned the bakery. After this we went down to the beach and sat on the rocks and enjoyed the views. We were cursing ourselves that we forgot to pack our bathers so we moved to the shade and Mike joined all the old nonnas and drank for the eternal fountain. You dont need to buy water in Italy, you just need to use the water fountains around the streets for some icy cold refreshing water.
After Amalfi we went to a tiny town way up at the top of the cliffs called Ravello where we had some lunch and did some people watching. This town had a true tuscan feel about it.
After this we made our way home to Rome on a long bus ride where everyone managed to fall asleep. Once we got back to the campsite we met up with afew busabout friends who we had not seen in a couple of weeks so it was really nice to have a drink or two with them and plan our next few days in Roma!
Lots of love Bek and Mike
