Aloha Everyone (sorry couldnt help it)
I cant believe I am writing our first blog..how exciting. you will have to excuse my spelling and grammer, these things are expensive and hard to use!
We we arrived safe in Hawaii after more than 15 hours worth of flying. Mike found it quite difficult to sleep but I on the other hand became friends with the likes of sleeping tablets and travel sick pills which i later learnt to hate.
Our hotel is really nice, its only a block from the beach. Actually its stuck in an 90s worp but thats how we like it. Most of hawaii is the same actually. Tacky flowers everywhere and wallpaper in our rooms. buts its clean and we couldnt ask for a better location.
When we got to our hotel we slept for afew hours and then made ourselves get up and go exploring. The weather is actually quite nice. we havnt been rained on until today (day 3) and it was only spitting.
One of our first stops was to the ABC stores which actually everywhere....kind of like circle K's in Bali...we had a field day in there marvelling at how cheap everything is and purchasing things like hershey bars and budwieser. That also brings me to another point...i LOVE the reality tv here..there is so many channels of it and its on 24/7.
That night we went out to get some really cheap mexican food from some markets off the main strip. it was very tasty. We are still coming to terms with us being the ones with the accent and also learning who and how to tip.
Day two we slept in quite late..we blame that on the jet lag or also the fact that we are getting used to our bum lifestyles. We went to this really popular restaurant where you get these massive breakfasts for $2.99. this includes juice, pancakes, eggs and bacon. BARGAIN!!! the idea is that i eat heaps then so i wont be hungry later...doesnt quite work that way.
I also woke up on Friday with hives..thats right Lauren and nae and anyone else who has seen those sexy lumps i get...they have come back with a vengance (spelling???) all over my legs. Mike has been the lucky guy who has to keep patting them down with cold flannels. They are hot, hideous and i took a photo for you to remind you of what they were like.
In the afternoon we emailed dad to tell him about our phone and for Mike to check the footy info (he just found out the Eagles lost and has gone off to buy some more bud beer, i guess to drink his sorrows).
We then went for a walk along Waikiki beach. Its beautiful, the main reason was to check out some totally tubular surf that we plan to "cut up" in the next few days. We also got our lunch from the local ABC store and ate it on the beachfront.
Dinner was local food called Loco Moco we shared a large and couldnt finish it. Food is MASSIVE here. Loco Moco is rice with a hamburger patty, gravy and a fried egg on top and it tastes as good as it sounds. We then went walking along the main street which is Kalakaua Ave.this is where all the action is! there was a busking guy that had us laughing so much we almost cried. could have sworn he was on drugs. he claimed he was a basketball superhero. we didnt get back to our hotel until nearly midnight.
Today was THE DAY, we went on our LOST tour which was very exciting. We hoped there would be super nerdy Lost fans on our tour so we could learn lots and didnt feel like such losers...and there was! we went to the most amazing locations and discovered the true beauty of Hawaii. The mountains and rainforest is amazing and they are the backdrop to some beautiful beaches. We went to such places as the insane asylem Hurley stayed at, the river and waterfalls where the survivers spent heaps of time, the crash site (and yes we saw the plane), the beach where the survivers live and the campsites that they live in. my favourite was Sawyers of course! We went to heaps more and we will put photos up to show you.
We then went to a burger bar and had food with the locals on Northshore. It was really beautiful. This is where the major surf spots are like Pipeline etc. I think everyone on our tour thought because we were from Australia we would be good surfers...we let them believe that.
On the way home we were speaking with American girls who laughed at words we used such as "number plates" and thought we were crazy to get excited over things like yellow school buses, taco bell and fire hydrants!
Now i must go upstairs to our room and console Mike over the Eagles loss. We move to our hostel tomoz and look forward to meeting fellow backpackers. We will write back later in the week with further adventures such as learning to surf (or should i say perfecting our technique), Pearl Harbour, the Pineapple Plantation and Mike has us going to some huge farmers market tomoz.
Once again apologes for the grammer and spelling. Please make sure you write to us so we feel loved! And we will load our photos once we find somewhere that accepts USB cords.
PS Dad, if you can be bothered. Call the phone ppl and say we refuse to pay for the plan if roaming isnt working here.
Lots of love, Mike and Bek
