Nelson 8th
Arrived in nelson after a few hours of driving. Stopped off at lake Rotoiti on the way, it was absolutely stunning. I cant belive how gorgeous all of the scenery is. There isnt really much to say blog wise. The pictures do more justice.
Chatted to a few more people on the bus. Turns out everyone was quite hungover when we were picked up in Wellington so I think it will be early ones tonight.
Had a roast ham dinner at the hostel and a couple of glasses of wine before heading to bed.
Westport 9th
We were up early the next day to head to Westport. We followed the Buller Gorge and did some walks along the way. That night we we to a local pizza place for a meet and greet which was really good, and chatted to loads more people so feel a lot better about it. Although one guy said me and gem seemed quite unapproachable. I told him he was wrong, and we had a ncie chat about LA!
Lake Mahinapau 10th
We didnt have such an early start the next day which was good. So had a little lie in and then got on the bus and headed towards cape Foulwind. Did a gorgeous hr long walk to a mountianous backdrop and saw the seal colony that they have on the rocks.
We then went to the Trueman track which leads to a beach where the waves are huge and crash against the rocks
The last stop was Punakaiki Pancakes and Blowholes where again the huge waves throw water through holes in the limestone. We got pretty wet but it was really good. Grabbed a quick soup lunch and then headed for the supermarket to stock up on stuff for the "Tarzan and Jane" themed party that night at Lake Mahinpau. Me and Gem are both so uncreative. We bought some string and 2 4XL t shirts and hoped for the best.
When we arrived at the hostel Les the owner came on board and told us the rules of the pub. he is about 86 years old and still going strong. We chopped up our tshirts had a quick shower and headed for the beach to see the sunset. Got some nice pictures and the mountains had gone pink and were gorgeous.
Then went to the bar for a couple until 6:30 when Les served up venison stew and steaks and cheesy potatoes and pasta. It was gorgeous and just what we all needed. The everyone went of to get changed before meeting in the bar at 9pm for the pau (pronounced poo) party...Some people had made a massive effort and looked really good. One guy had made a cocunut bikini others had made handbags (most of the guys came as Jane) Most people didnt realise we were dressed up and just looked like we were on a night out, but i think we looked lighty cavish...i cut my top too low so had to wear a boob tube underneath which was stripy so i passed that off as a zebra, and i had my sheepskin shoes on... It was a fantastic night, everyone made really good friends and just had a laugh.
Fraz Josef 11th
Everyone was pretty hungover when we left this morning at 9:30. We went to a deer farm which was a bit strange, but ok as it served greasy fry ups which is what we needed. From there we headed to Franz Josef where we are doing a Glacier Walk tomorrow. I managed to lose our room key twice in 3 hours so i am no longer allowed to look after it. gem did a horse ride butr i am still scarred from when the guy at Centre Parcs told me not to do it again as I was rubbish. So i came to upload my pictures and do my blog. We are going for a curry tonight and then having a very early one as the glacier walk tomorrow is 8hrs starting at 9am.
