Yesterday could have been called a day of surprises. We really had only one plan in the morning, to take the train to Downtown Toronto, but eventually the day turned to be full of something new.
The walk from Donna's house to the train station is quite long, and as this city is not that pedestrian-friendly as we have got used to in Finland, it felt even longer. In Toronto it is quite easy to walk around, but here in Pickering there is no tunnels and sidewalks go alongside bigger roads. When we finally got to the train station we were in a real hurry, and could never have made it without a nice woman who helped us. In Canada it seems that there is always someone to help you. The train trip to Downtown was a positive surprise as it only took about 30 minutes and the view was awesome. The track goes alongside the coast and Lake Ontario looks like the Mediterranean Sea in sunlight.
At Toronto's Union Station I drank some coffee and Michelle got an overdose of HUGE Canadian cinnamon bun.We bought also some fruits and decided to have a picnic somewhere.
That somewhere turned out to be a park right next to the CN Tower, once world's tallest free-standing building. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cn_tower for those who don't know) After a brief consideration, we decided to visit the tower as it was quite a clear and sunny day. The trip to the top of the world required 90 minutes of standing in the line (Faijalla olisi pettänyt hermot.) but once we got there, the view was just great and we took some really nice pictures.
After visiting the tower we were really hungry and decided to look for a restaurant. But our search was quickly interrupted when we realized that there was some kind of strange North American festival going on outside the CN Tower. Then we remembered how Donna's husband Barry told us that American football league NFL is visiting Canada for the first time. A park was full of people but the visit would have been a lot shorter without the "FREE BEER!" -shouts that we heard. After a couple of seconds we sat with two glasses of Canadian lager among ribs and corn-on-the-cob eating football fans.
We were maybe the only ones in the whole city who didn't realize that the game was about to begin on the Sky Dome stadium which was actually just next to us. Our search for lunch became much harder because of the invasion of American football fans in all the district's restaurants. Finally we headed to Pizza Pizza to get some 2,50 dollar slices.Outside the restaurant some Canadian national activists caused rage among US fans from Buffalo with their Canadian flags and anti-Buffalo Bills signs.
